Ryan Gustin emerges in victory lane at Wilmot Raceway.
What won the race: Repelling a challenge from Tanner English on a lap-29 restart, Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, held off Bobby Pierce over several late-race restarts to win Monday's 40-lap World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series debut at Wilmot Raceway. Gustin beat Pierce by 0.731 of a second for the $12,000 payday and his 13th career World of Outlaws series victory.
Quotable: “I didn’t want any more laps there, judging where (Bobby Pierce) was at. I don’t know if he was coming or not,” Gustin said. “(I was) definitely lucky to draw the pole there for sure, it always helps. (It’s) not the widest racetrack we go to, by any means, but it all worked out for us and we’ll take it.”
Key notes: Gustin grabbed his third Outlaws win this season, adding to victories at Florida's Volusia Speedway Park (Jan. 24, worth $12,000) and Georgia's Swainsboro Raceway (March 22, $15,000). ... Fifth-starting Bobby Pierce powered by Tanner English for second on the 34th lap, after English made slight contact with Gustin, but could never seriously challenge Gustin over the last seven laps. ... English faded to fifth after Dennis Erb Jr. slipped by him for third on a lap-36 restart and Dustin Sorensen reclaimed fourth on lap 37. ... Fresh off Saturday's Prairie Dirt Classic victory, Brian Shirley started 11th and finished ninth. ... Cody Overton recovered to 10th after spinning twice to draw the first two yellow flags. Overton originally left the turn-one racing surface and spun from fifth on the 26th lap before spinning again in nearly the same spot three laps later. ... Brent Larson also had a lap-33 spin in the same spot where Overton did, but continued to finish 15th. ... Ethan Dotson salvaged an 11th-place finish after he and Nick Hoffman tangled while battling for 10th on lap 36. Dotson appeared to get held up by Boom Briggs and pushed high entering turn three, right into Hoffman's path. ... Hoffman, who also suffered right-front damage in his heat race, soldiered to a 17th-place finish, the final starter to complete 40 laps. ... Turk Letizia spun on the ensuing restart attempt for the race's fifth and final caution. ... The series debut at Wilmot lasted just shy of 25 minutes.
On the move: Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, Calif., started 16th and finished 11th.
