A look at the newly shortened West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells, W.Va.
What won the race: Ripping around early leader Corey Miller completing the 21st lap, second-starting Tyler Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., paced the final 15 circuits to win Saturday's $5,000 Short Track Debut at West Virginia Motor Speedway. Tyler beat his father, Freddie Carpenter, by 1.174 seconds for the $5,000 debut on the newly-constructed third-mile oval occupying the existing frontstretch and infield of the original 5/8-mile layout.
Key notes: Tyler Carpenter captured his 17th overall feature victory of the season and his second special event, adding to Sept. 20's Mountaineer 50 triumph at Beckley (W.Va.) Motor Speedway, worth $10,000. ... Sixth-starting Freddie Carpenter grabbed second from Corey Miller on lap 25 and pursued his son over the final 10 laps, but never truly challenged. ... Miller, who led the opening 20 laps from the pole, settled for third. ... Fifteenth-starting Trever Feathers took fourth from Eddie Carrier Jr. on the 33rd lap, relegating Carrier to finish fifth. ... Tyler Evans, who ran as high as third in the early going, slipped to a seventh-place result. ... Fifth-starting Kyle Thomas faded to 12th at the checkers before the track's ambulance was sent to tend to a medical emergency in his pit stall. ... The 35-lap feature, the first on the newly-built third-mile infield oval, was completed without incident and lasted just shy of 10 minutes; 18 starters completed the distance with 22 running at the finish.
On the move: Trever Feathers of Winchester, Va., started 15th and finished fourth.
