Dallon Murty celebrates his first career Malvern East Series victory.
What won the race: Fourth-starting Dallon Murty of Chelsea, Iowa, staved off a late-race surge from Chad Simpson to control the second half of Saturday night's 30-lap Malvern Bank East Series main event at Independence Motor Speedway. Murty beat Simpson to the line by a few car lengths for the $3,500 payday, the most lucrative victory of his young career and his first on the Malvern East tour.
Quotable: “They farmed the racetrack, so it was a little wet at the beginning. But I got to second and was able to follow (Tim) Ward and then finally we kinda got into a little bit of a lapped traffic and was able to kinda pick them off down here in (turns) three and four,” Murty said. “It pretty much latched up around the top, so I knew I had to get up (high) and just stay up there.”
Key notes: Murty notched his second victory of the season at Independence after earning his first career Karl Chevrolet Pro Late Model Tour victory there last Saturday, worth $1,500. ... Chad Simpson was the highest points earner following the night's heat races and elected to start sixth for a possible $200 bonus. Simpson took the runner-up spot on a lap-20 restart and drew within 0.185 of a second of Murty as they came to take the white flag. ... Jesse Sobbing held the runner-up spot for the opening seven laps before slipping as low as sixth, then rebounding to finish third. ... Pole-starting C.J. Horn settled for fourth. ... Dylan Thornton climbed to a sixth-place result after failing to finish his heat race and winning the night's consolation. ... Late Model rookie Tim Ward led the opening 14 laps before retiring from fifth under the lap-20 caution. He was credited with 19th in his series debut. ... Darrel DeFrance brought out the race's lone caution and was the first retiree. ... The 30-lapper lasted just shy of 10 minutes, with 16 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., started 17th and finished sixth.
