Darrell Nelson controlled all 50 laps for his first victory since 2023.
What won the race: Polesitter Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, Minn., led all 50 laps in winning Tuesday's $5,000 Iron Man Invitational at Hibbing Speedway. Running mostly unchallenged, Nelson took the checkers more than two seconds ahead of Johnny Broking for his first Late Model victory since Aug. 31, 2023.
Quotable: "I got to thank Shane Sabraski for borrowing me a part, or we were going to load up and go home. So thanks for the Sabraski race team,” said Nelson, whose racing had been curtained by a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2023. “Everything just kind of works out for you. And I want to thank everybody, everybody that's helped me. I don't want to get all emotional, but you know who you are, y'all help me out. So and I'm glad to be here. I'm blessed to be here.”
Key notes: Nelson earned his first feature victory since 2023's Silver 1000 at Proctor (Minn.) Speedway, worth $2,750 on the WISSOTA Challenge Series. ... Fourth-starting Johnny Broking grabbed second from Kevin Burdick on a lap-18 restart, but never seriously challenged Nelson over the final 33 laps. ... Kyle Peterlin dropped Burdick to fourth on the lap-18 restart, before Burdick regained third a lap later. ... Jeff Massingill held third for the first handful of laps before slipping to fifth. ... Cade Nelson, the winner's son, gained eight spots to finish eighth. ... The race was slowed by five cautions, all of them in the first 18 laps, including for Cory Crapser's lap-two spin. ... NASCAR driver Ryan Newman appeared to clip an infield tractor tire on the third lap, nearly ripping his left-front nosepiece off; Newman eventually retired in 19th. ... Keith Niemi had turn-three trouble on the seventh lap before slowing and retiring on the 18th lap for the final yellow. ... Rookie Devin Fouquette spun on the 10th lap. ... The race lasted 29 minutes, with 14 starters completing 50 laps. ... Two sets of heat races were used to set the starting lineup; Eric Lillo scratched. ... The date was previously reserved for an XR Super Series race but switched to the revival of a Hibbing event formerly held in the 1990s.
On the move: Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing, Minn., started 12th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Nelson's MB Customs Race Car is sponsored by Amsoil, Tarnowski Bros. Construction and Excavating, Dave Lucia Trucking, Badger Excavating, Willow River Saloon, Jige Signs, CMD Shocks by Hammer and CSI Building.
