Jamie Oliver (center) led all 50 laps for the richest payday of his career.
What won the race: Making his debut start on an asphalt surface, polesitter Jamie Oliver of Murphy, N.C., earned a $12,000 flag-to-flag victory in Friday's Southern All Star Series-sanctioned Asphalt Assault 50 at Anderson Motor Speedway. Oliver survived a late-race restart and beat Heath Hindman to the checkers by 1.388 seconds for his second career Southern All Stars victory and second overall feature win this season.
Quotable: “(Series promoter) Ray Cook, I went and got some tires from him. We didn’t know (if we were going to race), I got ‘em late in the week,” Oliver said. “(I) really didn’t know what to do and he just said ‘don’t saw at the wheel, just go down there and ride around, see what happens’ and that’s what we did.”
Key notes: Oliver nabbed his first SAS win since Sept. 4, 2023's C.T. Barnett Memorial at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, N.C., a $10,034-to-win event that honored his late grandfather; Oliver now helps promote events at Tri-County. ... Oliver's $12,000 payday is the richest of his career. ... His other feature win this season came May 31 at Georgia's Sugar Creek Raceway, worth $4,000 on the Topless Outlaw Series. ... Heath Hindman trailed Oliver all 50 laps, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Kendall Franklin inherited third when Dante Curtis slowed and pulled in under green on lap 30. ... Kendall's father and former series champ Billy Franklin took fourth when David Payne retired on the 35th lap. ... The race's lone caution flew on lap 47 when Cale Finley slowed from sixth shortly after being lapped by Oliver; he pitted then continued to finish eighth, the final starter running at the finish. ... Michael Luna was credited with 11th as the race's first retiree when he pulled off on lap 14. ... The 50-lapper lasted 15 minutes with five starters completing the distance. ... This event drew eight entries last year.
On the move: Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., started 11th and finished sixth.
