Michael Leach captured his first victory in more than two years.
What won the race: Pole-starting Michael Leach of Sun River, Mont., led all 25 laps to capture Sunday's 10th annual World Short Track Championship at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. The 21-year-old driver beat Matt Henderson to the finish line by 1.8 seconds to earn a career-high $8,000 payday.
Quotable: “I told the boys ‘we gotta get one at Charlotte man,’ like you said, I’ve been so close a couple times,” Leach said. “I either finish second here or dead last. So to finally get a win here, it’s awesome, I’m pumped.”
Key notes: Leach's victory is his first of the season and first in a Late Model since Oct. 20, 2023, at Ogilvie (Minn.) Raceway. ... The Treasure State-native became the event's first 604 Crate winner from outside of the Carolina's since Jonathan Davenport in 2017. ... Benji Hicks spun into the infield on the eighth lap to bring out a yellow flag, followed by another on the ensuring restart as 12th-running Keaton Smith blasted the turn-one wall after contact with Lucas Adams. ... Adams later retired after spinning on lap 15 which collected Colton Stanley, who was able to continue. ... On the lap-15 restart, Cody Overton and Trevor Sise tangled for the fifth position, forcing Sise to retire. ... The event's winningest driver, Dillon Brown retired on the fifth lap and was credited with 21st. ... Second-running Colby Quick pulled off on the third circuit after striking the turn-four wall the previous lap; he finished 22nd. ... The 25-lapper lasted 25 minutes with 14 starters completing the distance. ... Rain and saturated track conditions earlier in the week shifted features for the 10-division event to Sunday.
