Hudson O'Neal (6) slips under Brandon Sheppard (1) at the checkers.
What won the race: Winning with a last-ditch pass of Brandon Sheppard exiting turn four, third-starting Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., captured Thursday's World Finals opener for his third career World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series victory. Sheppard led comfortably with a few laps to go, but the leader got too high exiting turn four and O'Neal slipped underneath at the flagstand for a $15,000 payday, his first at the Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Quotable: “I didn’t really think I had a shot. I knew we were catching lapped traffic and I seen him try and just stay committed to that middle,” O’Neal said. “I knew the air was so bad out there and they were blowing all that stuff out across (the track) and I felt it affected my racecar too. I thought the best shot I had was just to stay down (low) and maybe he’ll slip and I can get a run and that’s exactly what happened.”
Key notes: Bobby Pierce's 12th-place finish clinched his second WoO title in three years (2023). ... On the last lap, Hudson O'Neal followed the slower car of Tristan Chamberlain in turn four's low groove while leader Brandon Sheppard's car washed high up the turn-four banking, providing the opening for the winning pass. ... O'Neal led only the final lap. ... Nick Hoffman led the first 12 laps from outside the front row and settled for fourth. ... Sheppard took command on the 13th lap, but low-running polesitter Brandon Overton briefly slipped into the lead on lap 18. ... Sheppard went back ahead and appeared to have the race in hand until O'Neal's last-lap charge. ... Overton ended up 10th. ... Two cautions slowed the action, the first on the 24th lap for a slowing Jonathan Davenport, who was pushed to the pits with broken gears. ... On the 26th lap, Kyle Strickler spun inside turn four. ... A broken right-front shock hampered Daulton Wilson virtually the entire 16-minute feature, which concluded at 9:26 p.m. ... Friday's action will again have all three World Racing Group divisions in action with another $15,000-to-win Late Model prelim.
On the move: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, started 25th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: O’Neal’s K&L Rumley Enterprises Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Lionel Racing, Senior Life Insurance Company, Rumley Engineering, Mesilla Valley Transportation, American Racing Wheels, Professional Concrete, Mark Martin Automotive, O’Neal’s Salvage & Recycling, Indiana USSSA Fastpitch, Sunoco Race Fuels, Bilsetin Shocks and Wheeler Metals.

From staff reports

CONCORD, N.C. — Updates from Thursday’s first preliminary night of the 19th annual World Finals, featuring a 35-lap main event for World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series-sanctioned Super Late Models (results unofficial):

Feature

Winning with a last-ditch pass of Brandon Sheppard exiting turn four, third-starting Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., captured Thursday's World Finals opener for his third career World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series victory. Sheppard led comfortably with a few laps to go, but the leader got too high exiting turn four and O'Neal slipped underneath at the flagstand for a $15,000 payday, his first at the Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Pre-feature notes

Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., drew the pole among heat winners. He’s looking for his first WoO victory since April 22, 2023, at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. … Nick Hoffman was the lone heat winner who is a regular on the WoO circuit. … Bobby Pierce can clinch his second series title in three years by finishing mudpack or better in the 29-car field. … Kyle Strickler broke a valve spring in his engine while transferring through his consolation race, so he’ll tag the tail of the feature while driving R.C. Whitwell’s AK Race Car (Stickler plans to repair his motor and compete in it again Friday). … Brent Larson was listed as taking an emergency provisional, but he loaded up and won’t start the 35-lapper.

Drake Troutman led all the way to win the second heat by more than two seconds. ... In the third heat, three bad starts were triggered when Ricky Thornton Jr. got too high in turn one, then Devin Moran climbed polesitter Ryan Gustin's left rear in turn four as the green waved, and finally for Trent Ivey's spin (Gustin, who later said his carb strumbled when he tried to go, got a flat and Moran pitted after jumping the cushion on the third start attempt). ...
