SENOIA, Ga. — Jonathan Davenport’s Peach State Classic weekend couldn’t have gone much smoother. Bobby Pierce’s Senoia Raceway visit couldn’t been much more stressful.
Both drivers ended up with big smiles Saturday, Davenport because a $30,000 triumph added to Friday’s $20,000 gave him a bank-breaking weekend, and Pierce because he salvaged a chaotic 75-lapper to capture the $75,000 championship on the FloRacing Night in America presented by Kubota tour.
Davenport, the 42-year-old Blairsville, Ga., driver, led all but the first two laps and won by more than four seconds at the 3/8-mile oval, giving him four consecutive victories in the Longhorn Chassis he debuted a weekend earlier. While second place in the points paid $20,000 — a $55,000 difference than if the sixth-finishing Pierce had finished two spots worse — Davenport was thrilled to have a fantastic car heading toward the offseason.
“What an awesome job by my guys,” said Davenport, who won a pair of World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series last weekend in Concord, N.C., after his Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series playoff run fizzled out. “We finally got some stuff rolling here, and really just on the other side, the Lucas (Oil) deal, we just had some bad luck at the wrong time. We had speed all year. Just luck wasn't on our side when we needed it to be.”
Davenport notched his series-leading fourth FloRacing tour victory of the season while Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, edged Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., on the last lap to finish fourth. Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, and Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz. — who swept Senoia last year to win the FloRacing title — rounded out the top five.
In sixth with a sense of relief was Pierce, who struggled in prelims, rallied from 19th to third, found himself in more than one scrape in the second half of the race, and rallied back from a lap-54 flat tire to finish one position better than he needed to secure his second FloRacing crown.
"This has been the most stressful weekend I think I've had in a long time. I kind of knew, after last year Ricky won both nights. I kind of just figured heading into this weekend, J.D. was probably gonna win both nights. So just aiming for that top seven,” said Pierce, the 2023 FloRacing champ who is the first driver in the tour’s five-year history with two crowns. “Last night we struggled early on. I really thought that the gains we made would have propelled us to qualify better tonight, and it didn’t. So there I was starting in that same row again and I told my guys I was like it's gonna take another miracle run from the back.”
Davenport’s biggest challenge was not getting bored in a 63-minute race slowed by eight cautions, a few of them time-consuming. “Damn, that was a long one,” he said after climbing from his car in victory lane.
While he hadn’t thought much of Senoia previously, the weekend won him over at the Pollard family-promoted circuit that’s become the anchor to the FloRacing season.
“This place is awesome. This is the first time that I've really got to see the real Senoia. I've come here a few times and I wasn’t a huge fan of the place,” Davenport said. “But … wow, I mean you could just run all over to try to get to the traction spots. It’s all you can get when you got a little traction spot and it's ice-slick everywhere else. So, very cool racetrack. Very demanding. You just move around and try to make your car go as fast as possible.”
Gustin was never a threat to Davenport, but scored his best series finish of the season after finishing fourth on Friday.
“There was obviously a lot of things that went right for us there with the wrecks and whatnot, but we'll take it,” Gustin said. “At the beginning of that race, we were falling pretty fast and I didn't know if we was going to be able to stay on the lead lap there for a while. But once we got going, burned a little fuel off, (the) tires started to come in and the car got pretty good there.”
O’Neal, who started eighth, ended up just 72 points behind in the series points chase despite missing two early events.
“Congrats to Bobby and J.D,” O’Neal said. “We have a little bit to be desired yet. We were pretty good. Just needed just a little bit more (success) whenever it's kind of slowed down and to be able to float through that black (surface). But all in all we had a good piece, had a good weekend.”
Like Davenport, Pierce wasn’t a particular fan of Senoia entering a weekend with pleasant, mild weather, but he credited the track crew for a surface that gave him a chance to rally, and credited Davenport for his dominating weekend.
"I gotta give it to ‘em. It allowed us to go from the back to the front a couple times,” said Pierce, who a week earlier wrapped up his second World of Outlaws title. “And man, just congrats to J.D. He’s got an awesome car he's an awesome driver, the class of the field, and trying to just keep up with him and come through the field. I guess I love to make things exciting, I don’t know.”
Things got exciting in a back-and-forth battle with Senoia standout Ashton Winger, who took exception to a Pierce move and wheel-hopped Pierce’s left-rear wheel. Not long after, Pierce and Brandon Overton got together in turn four shortly after a lap-54 restart; the contact cut Overton's right-front tire, which blew out entering turn one and sent him hard into the outside wall. Overton was clipped by Brandon Sheppard, Trey Mills and his brother Cody, inflicting serious damage to his Longhorn Factory Team machine.
Climbing from his car, Overton heaved his helmet at Pierce’s machine as he rolled toward the infield pits for attention from his crew. Overton then paid a visit to the fire drill that was Pierce’s pit stop, leaning in the driver’s side window as the drivers swapped some colorful language.
Overton said he "wasn’t mad that (Pierce) turned left, I was mad it cut my tire so when I went into turn one it blew out and I smoked the wall."
Pierce admitted he "had to make some dicey moves coming through the field" and perhaps didn’t give Overton room, but wanted to see the replay.
"I was like, ‘Man, all I need to do is run top-seven; I wasn't trying to wreck you in the wall,’ ” Pierce said of the discussion with Overton. “I know he's mad and he has every right to be. If so, I'm gonna take the blame on that, and if he thinks he owes me one, he owes me.”
Changing the tire and making other repairs amid the infield mob surrounding Pierce’s car, he eventually made it back to the track. He was running ninth when three drivers ahead of him tangled, opening the door to finish high enough to secure the championship. He won by a six-point edge.
"I was pretty stressed. I’m not gonna lie. If we were better at the start of the night, I wouldn't have been so nervous, but I just knew we were gonna have to have some luck on our side,” said Pierce, who credited his team with enduring multiple suspension changes on his car over two nights “We had a mess going on back there. I don’t know. Everything worked out this weekend.”
