Nick Hoffman and hardware from his fourth career DIRTcar Nationals victory.

What won the race: Firing off from the outside front row and never letting up, Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., led all 35 laps of Thursday's Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals fourth round for a commanding second victory in a row at Volusia Speedway Park. Hoffman beat Tim McCreadie to the line by a distant 5.270 seconds for the $12,000 payday, his fourth career Late Model victory at Volusia and 12th career World of Outlaws Series triumph.

Quotable: “That race was probably won with the pill draw. (My son) Maddox here, got me the two (spot). I watched those later heat races, those guys restarting on the cushion or starting the race on the cushion and they were letting that go,” Hoffman explained. “For me, it was a no-brainer to just try and catch that moisture and beat (Chris Madden) down the front straightaway, which I was able to do.”

Key notes: All four of Hoffman's Volusia victories have come in the DIRTcar Nationals, including wins in consecutive starts after topping one of Wednesday's 20-lap split-field semifeatures. ... He now has 34 overall gator trophies (23 little gators; 11 big gators) across Late Model and modified action, including awards for week-long points titles. ... Hoffman now leads WoO and DIRTcar Nationals points after his first series victory since last Sept. 12 at Georgia's Needmore Speedway, also worth $12,000. ... Just as he did in a Jan. 24 Sunshine Nationals victory, Tim McCreadie — making his 500th WoO start — rode the low line from 22nd and took the runner-up spot from Bobby Pierce as they completed the 33rd lap. ... The 10th-starting Pierce made a bold fifth-to-second move on a lap-13 restart but never had anything for Hoffman before slipping to third. ... Tyler Erb finished fourth after contact with Ryan Gustin triggered the lap-13 caution. Gustin's right-front tire made contact with Erb's left side, sending Gustin spinning in turn two; he was credited with 12th. ... Ethan Dotson improved 14 spots to finish sixth. ... Josh Rice gained nine spots to complete the top-10 finishers. ... In addition to the Erb-Gustin tangle on lap 13, the race was slowed one other time on lap five when Cody Overton slowed from 10th and retired. ... The 35-lap opener under WoO sanction lasted 17 minutes with 16 starters completing the distance. ... Brandon Sheppard won his 50th career WoO heat race earlier in the night. ... Max Blair failed to transfer out of the second heat after Garrett Alberson attempted to clear him with a turn-two slide job, the resulting contact sent Blair hard into the turn-two wall and ended his night. ... Dan Ebert scratched after motor trouble in time trials; Ebert's team has swapped engines in preparation for Friday's DIRTcar Nationals fifth round.

Heat race recap

Cody Overton outdueled fourth-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. in the early going then held him off on a late restart, winning the first heat race by 0.613 of a second. Second-starting Kyle Strickler held on for the third and final transfer spot into Thursday’s 35-lap main event. The night’s first caution flew on the sixth lap when Evan Koehler attempted to avoid contact with Jake Timm, spinning in the middle of turns one and two; Koehler continued but could only work his way back to ninth. … Chris Madden was unfazed by a mid-race restart, leading all eight laps and winning the second heat by 1.045 seconds over fourth-starting Daulton Wilson. Garrett Alberson finished third after his turn-two slide job narrowly cleared Max Blair, only for Blair to hit Alberson’s left-rear tire and hop the cushion before slamming the outside wall; Blair was OK but needed a tow back to the pits. … Nick Hoffman cruised to win the third heat, leading the entire distance and crossing the line 0.693 of a second ahead of fourth-starting Tristan Chamberlain. Mike Marlar held off race-long challenges from Dustin Sorensen for the third and final transfer position into the $12,000-to-win DIRTcar Nationals feature. … Tyler Erb earned a flag-to-flag victory in the fifth heat, beating Bobby Pierce to the checkers by 0.778 of a second. Tyler Bruening started and finished third, joining Erb and Pierce in punching his ticket into the night’s main event. … Second-starting Drake Troutman dominated the sixth and final heat race, leading all eight laps and crossing the line 2.512 seconds ahead of fourth-starting Brenden Smith.
