What won the race: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led all 54 laps from the pole and repelled a late charge from Zack Mitchell to win Friday's inaugural Ed Basey Memorial at Modoc Speedway. In the first Super Late Model event at the revamped track in more than four years, Overton beat his younger brother, Cody Overton, by 2.304 seconds for a $10,004 payday and his third victory of the season on the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series.
Quotable: “Just a special, special race to win,” Overton said. “I always looked up to Edward (Basey). He was one of my heroes when I was growing up. I remember sitting in those same bleachers watching him pass, I think Kelly Guy or whoever, on the outside here. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. So, to come back and win the first one they have at Modoc is really cool.”
Key notes: Brandon Overton notched his 11th career SAS victory and 12th on the Schaeffer's Spring Nationals. The two Ray Cook-operated tours co-sanctioned the event. ... Overton swept February's SAS-sanctioned Winter Freeze at Georgia's Screven Motor Speedway. ... Cody Overton overcame a flat right-rear tire while running second on lap 21 to reclaim the runner-up spot from Zack Mitchell on lap 52. He didn't threaten his sibling, however, and finished second without a right-rear quarter panel and with his car's engine overheating after passing tech inspection. ... It was his fourth runner-up finish this season and third behind his older brother, including Jan. 30 at Georgia's Needmore Speedway and Feb. 9 at Florida's Volusia Speedway. ... The seventh-starting Mitchell settled for third after trailing Brandon Overton for laps 29-51. ... Carson Ferguson slipped by Garrett Smith for fourth on the final lap. ... The event honored Ed Basey of Evans, Ga., the 2003 Carolina Clash Series champ who won more than 300 dirt races. He died on Sept. 22, 2023, at the age of 63. ... Brad Basey, Ed's nephew, scratched after hot laps. … It was the first major Super Late Model event at Modoc since Oct. 23, 2021, a $7,500 unsanctioned race won by Trent Ivey. Track owner Ronnie Powell spent $2 million in a massive facility overhaul. ... Besides the lap-21 caution for Cody Overton's flat tire, four other yellow flags slowed the action: Lap 13 for a spin by Billy Franklin; lap 19 for Payton Freeman's turn-two spin; lap 28 when 11th-running Evan Harrell slowed with a flat right-rear tire; and lap 38 when Will Hicks slowed and pulled off. ... The 54-lapper lasted nearly 43 minutes with nine starters completing the distance. ... Fourth-starting Ben Watkins slowed during pace laps and required a push to the pits before the green flag flew. ... Cameron Tribble scratched. ... The co-sanctioned doubleheader weekend concludes with Saturday's $20,053-to-win Ginger Owens Memorial March Madness at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C.
On the move: Cla Knight of North Augusta, S.C., started 16th and finished 10th.
