Kyle Berck celebrates his 100th career Malvern West Series victory.
What won the race: Riding the Boone County Raceway cushion around Jason Hahne on the 21st lap, eighth-starting Kyle Berck of Marquette, Neb., paced the final 10 circuits of Friday's Malvern Bank West Series stop for his 100th career tour victory. Berck stretched his lead in the late going and beat Hahne by 1.917 seconds for the $3,000 payday, his first Malvern West victory in nearly two years.
Quotable: “We were really messing with some stuff, we haven’t raced for so long with this car. Just (didn’t have) a lot to lose,” Berck said. “I threw some other weird (setup) stuff at it, with kind of an educated guess, and it only wanted to go around the outside. Once I got that momentum built, I knew where to push it and where to be careful. It was treacherous a few times, but we walked it to the front.”
Key notes: Berck remained loyal to Boone County's cushion, capturing his second straight victory at the Albion, Neb., 3/8-mile oval after winning there June 5 in local IMCA Late Model action. ... Berck notched his first touring series victory since Aug. 17, 2024, a West Series stop at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., also worth $3,000. ... It's his sixth career Malvern West victory at Boone County (2010-'11, '13-14, '21) and 100th overall, further extending his lead on the tour's all-time list. ... Third-starting Jason Hahne slipped by early leader Charlie McKenna on a lap-four restart and paced the field until Berck blasted around his outside at the completion of the 21st lap; Hahne settled for second. ... The second-starting McKenna, of Ames, Iowa, led the opening three laps before slipping fourth at the finish. ... Blair Nothdurft challenged Hahne on the lap-four restart and held second until giving way to Berck on a lap-18 restart. ... Jake Neal initially took fourth from McKenna on the lap-18 restart then passed Nothdurft for third on lap 25 and completed the podium finishers; McKenna slipped by Nothdurft for fourth as they raced towards the white flag, dropping Nothdurft to fifth. ... Polesitter Kale Kosiski was a non-factor in fading to finish seventh. ... The race was slowed by two cautions, the first coming for a Mike Collins spin in turn four on the fourth lap; Collins later had catastrophic engine failure in front of the leaders as they took the white flag and failed to finish. ... The final stoppage came on the 18th lap when 10th-running J.C. Wyman stopped in turn two; Wyman recovered to finish 13th. ... The 30-lapper lasted 13 minutes with 16 starters completing the distance and 19 running at the checkers.
On the move: Jacob Hobscheidt of Plattsmouth, Neb., started 18th and finished sixth.
