Bobby Pierce got right back on track with his Sharon victory.
What won the race: Quickly rebounding from the end of his six-race World of Outlaws Late Model Series win streak, Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., overtook Nick Hoffman for the lead on lap 18 and dominated the remainder of the distance to capture Saturday night’s 60-lap Battle at the Border at Sharon Speedway. He beat Hoffman by 1.465 seconds to pocket $20,000 for his 17th WoO victory of the season and seventh in his last eight tour starts.
Quotable: “On a caution, that’s the only thing you’re thinking about, is where do I go in turn one, and how do I get off of turn two?” Pierce said of facing three restarts while leading. “It starts coming off of four. You want to make sure you have a couple car lengths, and you know, this track, it gets super slippery, so when we’re turning down across the hill, across the black, the tires are spinning and you got to wait and wait and wait, and when you’re the leader, you just want to gas it. It’s hard to do that, but I felt like we had our restarts pretty good and our was really good tonight.”
Key notes: Pierce’s triumph was his fourth in the last five WoO features contested at Sharon. He swept a doubleheader in 2024 and won last year’s Battle at the Border opener. … It was the 59th career WoO triumph for Pierce, who ran second behind Hoffman for the race’s first 17 circuits and then wasn’t seriously challenged once in command. … Hoffman led laps 1-17 but ceded the top spot after slipping high in turn two, allowing Pierce to dive underneath and surge ahead through turns three and four. He turned back a threat from Ryan Gustin to finish second. … Gustin, who won at Sharon in 2022 and ’23, settled for a third-place finish. … Tim McCreadie reached fourth on lap 41 and finished there while Tyler Erb placed fifth after passing Dustin Sorensen for the spot on lap 53. … Three caution flags dotted the feature, all for cars slowing on the track: Chub Frank (lap 18), Lincoln Smith (lap 44) and Eli Johnson (lap 46). … Brock Pinkerous saw his night end when his car went up in smoke during the third heat race after he clipped an infield tire, damaging his car’s nose puncturing the radiator. ... Boom Briggs set fast time but spun on the opening lap of the third heat. ... Friday’s $12,000-to-win Battle at the Border opener rained out.
On the move: Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., started 23rd and finished 14th.
