Ronnie Johnson grabbed the Chevy Series victory at Tazewell.
What won the race: Hall of Famer Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., jumped to the lead at the outset and kept the field at bay for all 50 laps, pocketing $3,000 for his second consecutive Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series victory.
Quotable: “Things happen fast at this racetrack, and if you try to take it easy, you can end up going from being the leader to last in a hurry,” Johnson said. “When you get to the lapped cars, you’ve got to get by them in a hurry. When I was in lapped traffic, I didn’t know how big of a lead I had, but I saw the flashes from the photographers’ cameras, and that usually means you’ve got close company.”
Key notes: Johnson's winning margin over Tyler Crowder was 2.379 seconds. ... Seven cars completed all 50 laps. ... Johnson previously won May 17 at Penton (Ala.) Raceway; he became the tour's first repeat winner this season. ... Tazewell hosted the fourth of 10 tour events and its first of two series stops; competitors return on Aug. 31 for a $4,400-to-win event. ... The tour is for Late Models powered by CT 525 engines, the economical, all-aluminum crate powerplant by Chevrolet.
Winner's sponsors: Johnson's MasterSbilt Race Car is sponsored by Appleton Power Rack & Pinions, FG Lumber, Hoosier Racing Tire, NeSmith Chevrolet, Smith Competition Fire Systems and VP Racing Fuels.
Points chase: Johnson extended his points lead with the victory. He entered Saturday with a 12-point edge over Crowder and fifth-finishing Dingus Griffin.
