Bobby Pierce picked up a $5,000 MLRA victory at Quincy.
What won the race: Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., gained command for good on lap 29 after trading slide-jobs with Mitch McGrath and survived a late-race engine scare to register a $5,000 victory in Sunday night's inaugural Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Association-sanctioned Scottie 45 at Quincy Raceway. The 22-year-old star pulled away from Will Vaught in the closing circuits to tally his fifth MLRA triumph of 2019.
Quotable: "I didn't really appreciate the move, so I wasn't the friendliest giving it back to him," Pierce said of trading sliders with McGrath. "Right when that happened (on lap 29), I went down a cylinder I think, maybe two. Something was really wrong and my oil pressure was pretty low so we will check it out. Hopefully it's alright."
Key notes: Pierce started from the pole position in the 45-lapper and led until a lap-14 restart — the only restart of the race — when McGrath pulled a slider in turn one to vault from third to first. Pierce returned the favor to McGrath with a slider of his own through turns one and two on lap 29 to grab the lead. ... Vaught, who didn't start Quincy's May 5 MLRA feature due to engine woes, followed Pierce past McGrath on lap 29 and briefly challenged for the top spot before losing touch with the pacesetter late and settling for second. ... McGrath placed third while Californian Jason Papich was fourth. ... Pierce also won Quincy's first MLRA earlier this season. ... Jeff Roth didn't start the feature. ... The only remaining MLRA event is the fourth annual Fall Nationals Oct. 11-12 at Lucas Oil Speedway.
On the move: Logan Martin of West Plains, Mo., advanced from 12th to finish fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce's Pierce Race Car has a Pro Power Racing Engine with sponsorship from Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Premier Waste Services, Viper Motorsports, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing, Berger’s Marina, Digital Copy Systems, First Spear, Quality Paint & Body and Advanced Suspension.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Crane, Mo.'s Vaught (1,374 points) led Mitch McGrath (1,293), Logan Martin (1,281), Joseph Gorby (1,062) and Chad Simpson (1,000).
