From staff reports

ROSSBURG, Ohio (Sept. 5) — Forgot to bring to a gift to Hudson O’Neal’s birthday party? No worries, the Martinsville, Ind., youngster had no problem treating himself Thursday night. Taking the lead on lap 10 of the night’s second 25-lap World 100 preliminary feature at Eldora Speedway, the third-starting O’Neal cruised to a convincing win.

O’Neal finished 1.519 seconds ahead of Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., who rallied from eighth, while fifth-starting Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., finished third. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., who led the first nine laps from the pole position, slipped to fourth, with Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., completing the top five.

The victory came on O’Neal’s 19th birthday and left the fresh-faced teenager admittedly a bit choked up as he stood in victory lane on a prelim night ahead of the 49th annual World 100.

“Man I can’t believe it. I’m a little emotional,” said O’Neal. “It’s alway been a dream to stand on this stage. To do it on my 19th birthday makes it that much more special. I couldn’t do it without all the support of my family and car owner and my crew and my girlfriend back home Tessa and my mom and dad. They just … they all do so much. This is unbelievable. I can’t believe it.”

O’Neal fell in behind Babb and second-starting Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, on the opening lap, but quickly began to advance. He grabbed second from Schlenk on lap two and soon drew within striking distance of Babb. With Babb running the topside of the famed half-mile oval, O’Neal began to apply pressure on lap seven. A lap later, he pulled even with the leader as they raced through turn four.

As the two crossed the line with Babb holding a 0.320-second advantage, the first of two cautions waved. Babb elected the bottom on the double-file restart and darted back out front, but O’Neal stayed with him before finally nosing ahead to lead lap 10. With clean air ahead, O’Neal sailed away.

“I knew we had a good racecar going into it and I knew I was a little faster than Babb there on that first run and I just kept getting better and better and better,” said O’Neal. “Once I started moving (around) a little bit and found a little something better, I knew we had something for ‘em.

“On those restarts, every one of them, I didn’t breath man. It was the longest … I don’t know when I took the lead, but probably the longest 15 laps of my life. I can’t believe it. It’s so cool to stand on this stage in front of all these people. It’s unbelievable like I said. Man I hope we carry this speed over into the next couple of days.”

O’Neal finished comfortably ahead of Davenport, who needed to rally from the fourth row following an eight-car inversion that helped set the starting grid. The top two finishers from each of the four heats were inverted based on their qualifying times, with the driver among the eight who recorded the slowest time starting from the pole and the quickest starting eighth.

The two-time World 100 winner was up to fifth on lap five. A lap later he and McCreadie split Schlenk as Davenport went to fourth and McCreadie fifth. By the time the caution waved on lap 12 for Schlenk, who was slowing as he headed down the frontstretch, Davenport was third.

Though he was able to pull close to O’Neal on the restart, Davenport never managed to make a serious bid for the lead. And after a later scrape with the wall, he was content to ride in second.

“We was really good here back at the Dream (in June) with this car,” said Davenport. “We’re just trying some new things that we’ve stumbled upon. It just wasn’t quite as maneuverable tonight as I would have liked. I was way too free so I was kinda married to the top. I messed up one time and that wall jumped out there and got me and knocked the spoiler off and then I was really free so I couldn’t run the bottom anymore.

“We just tried to make some laps up there and tried not to knock the frontend off of it. We can beat the sheet metal out, but it’s hard to get the frontend back exactly like you want it. We worked for many hours getting everything perfect on this thing and I didn’t want to chance that.”

After a spirited battle with Davenport before finally settling for third, McCreadie, who was piloting the K&L Rumley Longhorn rather than the Longhorn house car, was content with the outcome — and the $3,000 check he picked up for finishing third. He said the invert helped nudge along his effort throughout the night.

“I just gotta thank the invert. Our car was off a little bit, a little bit, a little bit and the invert just kept putting us back up front,” said McCreadie, whose podium finish helped Longhorn sweep the top three spots. “I don’t know if I agree (with the invert), but we’ll take it tonight to make some money.”

The defending World 100 winner said his third-place finish was a good starting spot, but added that there’s still a few areas he could improve upon.

“It’s a good start,” said McCreadie. “We need to … I can’t circle very well and I gotta (use the throttle) a good bit and that’s just a recipe to chunk tires out or whatever. Hopefully we can get better. I’m happy with a third. I don’t feel like we’re as maneuverable as we need to be, but I’m sure there are a whole lot of people who feel worse."

Heat race notes

Jonathan Davenport referenced his Six Pack-inspired car after winning the first heat. “This thing is pretty good for dragging it out of the junkyard,” he said with a smile about his machine that purposely sports a weathered look. … Bent right-rear sheet appeared to be the cause of the cut right-rear tires that Scott Bloomquist suffered in the first heat on lap eighth (while running fifth) and coming down to the checkered flag (leaving him with a 10th-place finish). … Hudson O’Neal had a look of worry on his face after winning the second heat. “I’m a little concerned,” the 19-year-old birthday boy said. “I picked up a pretty bad shove. I don’t know what’s going on.” Further inspection appeared to reveal that a body brace was pushing into his car’s right-front corner, likely causing his problem. … Australian Paul Stubber slammed the turn-three wall on lap eighth of the first heat, sending him off the track on the back of a wrecker. “That was a big one,” Stubber said after climbing out of his No. 31AUS, which hit the concrete flush on its left side. Stubber braced himself for the coming impact and noted that he was glad he was wearing a head-and-neck restraint and using a full-containment seat; his car, meanwhile, appeared to have a bent left-side frame rail. … Rusty Schlenk conceded that he “lucked out on the invert” after taking advantage of an up-front starting spot town the third heat, but he felt his Rayburn machine performed well. “I gotta work on my qualifying tomorrow,” he said. “We have a pretty good car. I think we have a shot at a pretty good weekend.” … Shannon Babb knew he “had to make the most” of his prime starting spot in the fourth heat and he did just that to win on a tricky racetrack. “It’s really patchy,” he said. “If you hit the slick spots you’ll just sit there.”

Fourth heat

Polesitter Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., pulled away to win the fourth heat comfortably ahead of fellow Land of Lincoln campaigner Frank Heckenast Jr. Babb won by 1.118 seconds in yet another caution-free heat race. Nick Hoffman slipped to third after battling Heckenast for second early and Brian Birkhofer took fourth. Josh Richards finished in the first and final transfer spot, while 2019 Dream winner Brandon Sheppard finished sixth and will head to a consolation race.

Finish (top five transfer): Shannon Babb, Frank Heckenast Jr., Nick Hoffman, Brian Birkhofer, Josh Richards, Brandon Sheppard, Brandon Overton, Steven Roberts, Dustin Nobbe, Shannon Thornsberry, Larry Greer. Scratched: Bryant Dickinson.

Third heat

Riding the topside to a 10-lap caution-free victory, polesitter Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, won the third heat. Schlenk held off a charging Tim McCreadie by 0.307 seconds. The defending World 100 winner fell back back six car lengths, but rallied in the final two laps to pull up to Schlenk’s rear deck. John Blankenship finished third, with Scott James and Jacob Hawkins completing the top five.

Finish (top five transfer): Rusty Schlenk, Tim McCreadie, John Blankenship, Scott James, Jacob Hawkins, Chase Junghans, Donald McIntosh, Billy Moyer Jr., Brent Larson, Duane Chamberlain, Tyler Dietz. Scratced: Tim Lance.

Second heat

Pulling away on the opening lap, polesitter Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., raced to a flag-to-flag victory in the second heat. O’Neal, celebrating his 19th birthday, finished 0.411 seconds ahead of Shanon Buckingham, who won an early battle with Mason Zeigler to secure the runner-up spot. Zeigler settled for third, while Kyle Bronson finished fourth. Jason Jameson finished fifth to grab the final transfer spot.

Finish (top five transfer): Hudson O’Neal, Shanon Buckingham, Mason Zeigler, Kyle Bronson, Jason Jameson, Bobby Pierce, Jonathan Henry, Jason Feger, Jay Johnson, Casey Noonan, Bob Gardner, Josh Hampton.

First heat

Darting between front-row starters Chris Simpson and Gregg Satterlee as they raced off of turn two on the opening lap, fourth-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., grabbed an early lead and pulled away to a commanding advantage. Following a late caution, Davenport had to rally back by Simpson, who snuck by on the restart. Davenport won, with Simpson second and Satterlee third. Kyle Strickler and Ashton Winger completed the top five. Paul Stubber spun to the outside wall in turn three to bring out a caution on lap eight. Overall fast qualifier Scott Bloomquist pitted with a flat right rear tire on lap eight, but gained a reprieve when the second caution waved just after the lap-eight restart as Josh Robertson’s machine put fluid down on the racing surface. The lengthy cleanup allowed Bloomquist’s crew more than enough time to change the tire and get the Mooresburg, Tenn., driver back on the track.

Finish (top five transfer): Jonathan Davenport, Chris Simpson, Gregg Satterlee, Kyle Strickler, Ashton Winger, Jimmy Mars, Mike Marlar, Jerry Bowersock, Rob Anderzack, Scott Bloomquist, Justin Shipley, Josh Robertson, Paul Stubber.

More pre-race notes

Making his first Eldora crown jewel appearance since failing to qualify for the 2015 World 100 (in the wake of his memorable sixth-place Dream finish three months earlier in his first big-show start at the half-mile oval), 21-year-old Josh Rice of Veronia, Ky., is running a Brucebilt XR1 Rocket fielded by Sunesis Construction’s Rick Jones that looks very familiar to longtime Eldora fans. Its number (1b), quarter-panel sponsor (Brooks Electric) and color scheme mirror that used by his father, Jerry, when the elder Rice captured the 2006 Eldora Super Late Model title. … Six-time World 100 champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., is back in action at Eldora after skipping June’s Dream XXV activities — and after sounding quite assertive following last year’s World 100 that he had made the final Eldora start of his legendary career. … The oldest driver in the field is Vern LeFevers of Cincinnati, Ohio, a soon-to-be 81-year-old who returned to competition this season for the first time in 17 years to drive a Crate Late Model at Florence Speedway in Union, Ky. The 1978 Eldora Late Model track champion and a four-time World 100 feature starter — his first came in 1975 and last was in 1984 (a career-best ninth-place finish) — LeFevers decided to take another shot at Eldora behind the wheel of Gary Engle’s Rocket No. 15. … Among the drivers sporting new colors for the weekend are Chris Ferguson of Mt. Holly, N.C. (swapped his black scheme for white), Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind. (his No. 7R’s light blue base with fluorescent accents is a throwback to his 2005 sportsman car) and Jackie Boggs of Grayson, Ky. (his No. B4 is predominantly red). … Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, has a Busch Light-inspired wrap on his No. 32. “I told him he better have nothing but Busch Light in his trailer now,” quipped Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, who is also in the field driving Jason Rauen’s No. 15b. … Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., is driving his family-owned 007 machine with a Buick engine under the hood rather than his usual Blount Motorsports ride. … Making his first career attempt at the World 100, Jeff Curl of Fairbury, Ill., finds himself parked in the same inside backstretch pit stall that was occupied by last year’s World 100 winner Tim McCreadie. With Curl’s conventional enclosed trailer closely resembling the transporter that famously carried McCreadie’s race-winning car in 2018, Curl has been joking that perhaps some of T-Mac’s magic from a year ago will rub off on him.

Pre-race notes

The World 100 weekend kicks off under wonderful weather conditions: partly sunny skies and a comfortable high temperature in the mid-70s. Friday and Saturday boast virtually identical forecasts. … The 98 entered racers were reminded during the drivers’ meeting that the World 100 entry form stated this year’s qualifying format for preliminary nights will invert six cars from qualifying for the heats and the top two finishers in each heat will start the 25-lap features from the first four rows inverted by the time-trial laps. In addition, it was noted that the minimum weight standard this weekend is 2,350 pounds on Thursday and Friday and 2,300 pounds for Saturday’s 100-lap finale; DIRTcar Racing director Sam Driggers said the lower weight rule for the century grind is a “safety thing” requested by drivers so a quick turnaround between B-mains and the long-distance feature won’t force teams into a rush to add lead weights to their cars. … Defending World 100 champion Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., decided to enter the weekend’s action in the K&L Rumley Longhorn car (carrying his usual Sweeteners Plus No. 39 regalia) that he ran in June’s Dream XXV rather than the Longhorn house car he piloted to victory last year at Eldora. … The walking wounded teammates — Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn. (still hobbling from his right hip and leg injuries suffered in March) and Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C. (fractured right eye socket from a golf cart accident just over two weeks ago at Ohio’s Mansfield Motor Speedway) — are ready for competition parked side-by-side in the upper pit area. … Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., heads into the weekend having captured a preliminary feature during four of the last five crown jewel events at Eldora. He ranks as the driver with the most World 100 feature starts (24) without a victory in the race, however. … John Blankenship of Knoxville, Tenn., the 2013 World 100 winner, is making his first start since finishing ninth in June’s 100-lap Dream. … Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., is racing on his 19th birthday as he begins his quest to make his second World 100 feature field. He finished 18th in the 2017 event but sat out last year’s World 100 weekend while recovering from shoulder surgery.
