Don Shaw talks about his fifth SWDRA victory of the season.
What won the race: Don Shaw of Ham Lake, Minn., snagged the lead from 2019 SWDRA Champion, John Cornell of Phoenix, Ariz., on lap 22 of the 25-lap feature on Saturday night and held on to win the $1,000 regular season finale at Arizona Speedway.
Key notes: Shaw has won all five of his SWDRA starts in 2019. ... Top-five finishers John Morris Jr. of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Matt Sparby of Blackduck, Minn., are new to SWDRA action after recently purchasing Late Models. ... John Cornell took the lead from polesitter Bruce Duckett on the second lap, bringing along teammate Craig Parker. ... Cornell survived the race's only caution flag on lap eight, as he continued to lead over Parker, with Shaw having advanced into third place. ... Shaw made quick work of Parker for the second position, on the ensuing restart and consistently remained within striking distance of Cornell. ... With the race going green for the final 17 circuits, Cornell began to hit slower traffic in the closing laps, allowing Shaw to gain ground. ... Shaw found the right time to strike, taking the lead from Cornell at the completion of lap 22 and held on for the final three circuits. ... Saturday's win moves Shaw into a tie for fourth place on the all-time series wins list, with 14 career triumphs. ... While Saturday marked the 2019 SWDRA regular season finale, Arizona Speedway will host two non-points races on Nov. 29 and Nov. 30, paying $1,500 and $3,000-to-win during the Copper Classic; track promoter Jonah Trussel is providing free Copper Classic pit passes for Nov. 2's 16 Late Model drivers.
On the move: Brad Williams of Tucson, Ariz., advanced nine positions to finish sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Shaw's Rocket Chassis has a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsorship from Shaw Trucking, Blaine Brothers, Sure Step, Dehn Oil, Northern Metal Recycling, SIDUMP’R Trailer Co., Village Bank and Lube-Tech.
Points chase: John Cornell of Phoenix, Ariz., finished second to clinch his third consecutive series title.
