What won the race: Utilizing lapped traffic on the 23rd circuit, 10th-starting Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., grabbed the lead from race-long leader Dale McDowell and cruised the rest of the way to win the Schaeffer's Spring Nationals season opener at I-75 Raceway on Friday. Overton crossed the finish line 2.677 seconds ahead of fellow Georgian Michael Page of Douglasville to earn $5,053.
Key notes: The victory is Overton's fourth career win with the Schaeffer's Spring Nationals. His three previous series wins came in 2017, the year of his lone championship on the Ray Cook-promoted tour. … McDowell led the first 22 laps from the pole before slipping to third. ... Friday's feature, the series first-ever visit to the Sweetwater, Tenn., oval, which was reconfigured and lengthened in the offseason, was slowed by four caution flags and lasted just less than 27 minutes. ... Nine of the 22 starters completed all 53 laps. ... The race, originally set for March 27 before being pushed to April 10 and then again to April 16, was originally scheduled to pay $10,053-to-win, but with the shift to Friday, was adjusted to $5,053-to-win.
On the move: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., won on Friday, after starting 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Overton’s Wells Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Race Engine and sponsored by CrossFit Overton, Allstar Concrete, E-Z-Go, Big Dog Stump & Tree, R.W. Powell Construction, Convenient Lube, Allstar Performance and Topnotch Kustom Koncepts.
Points chase: Before I-75, Jonathan Davenport (200 points) of Blairsville, Ga., led Kyle Larson (196), Tyler Erb (194), Dale McDowell (192) and Donald McIntosh (190).
