What won the race: Taking advantage of a late-race restart, third-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., wheeled the G.R. Smith/J.C. Clary Brodnax-Shaker Motorsports No. 89 past Austin Horton for the lead with an outside move on lap 18 and paced the remainder of the distance to capture Friday's 25-lap Billy Clanton Classic at Senoia Raceway. Winger beat Horton to the finish line for the $3,000 winner's check in the Southern All Star Series-sanctioned event.
Quotable: "Anyone who knows the Clanton family knows how much they mean to me, so it's awesome to win this race," Winger said. "Austin got through lapped traffic way better than I could and I had to move around some and I was not paying attention to my stick guy. Then Shane (Clanton) got by me and I never expected that, but I just kept trying to find that top. When we had that restart, I just gave it everything I had ... I drove in as hard as I could to clear (Horton) and I hope I didn't chop-off his nose too bad there."
Key notes: Winger remained perfect at Senoia this season, winning for the fourth time in as many starts. His other wins at the track include two other SAS races and a World of Outlaws victory on Oct. 2. ... The win was Winger's third of the season in SAS competition and the sixth of his career with the touring series. It was also his first checkered flag since joining the G.R. Smith/J.C. Clary team. ... After winning the feature and securing the 2021 Senoia track championship in Limited Late Model competition, Horton led the first 17 laps of the SAS feature before settling for the runner-up position, 2.654 seconds behind Winger. ... Shane Clanton finished third in the event which honored his late father. ... Brandon Overton advanced from 11th to place fourth. ... Friday's feature, a tuneup for Saturday’s $10,000-to-win Hence & Reba Pollard Memorial that’s also sanctioned by the Southern All Star Series, was slowed by only one incident and lasted 11 minutes. ... Eleven competitors completed all 25 laps.
On the move: Jordy Nipper of Gray, Ga., started 22nd and finished 13th.
Winner's sponsors: Winger's Brodnax-Shaker Motorsports Longhorn Chassis has a Cornett Racing Engine and is sponsored by Clary’s Used Cars, Victory Circle Auto Sales and Performance Auto Center.
