Matt Dooley (18) keeps Rick Rickman (86) in check at Columbus.
What won the race: Taking the lead on lap 22 when Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., suffered mechanical problems while leading, Matt Dooley of Fayetteville, Ga., utilized the high line to power around hometown driver Rick Rickman and led the final three laps to win Saturday at Columbus Speedway. Dooley’s first-ever Super Late Model victory, and first on the tour, paid $4,000.
Quotable: "I saw Josh break and I thought, 'Oh crap, I'm racing for the lead.' So I had to really get up on the wheel, got on the cushion and just sent it, that's all I could do," Dooley said. "(Rick Rickman) gave me room. i=It was a good race and my car was good. Man, I can't believe it. This is my new favorite track for sure."
Key notes: Rick Rickman seemed poised to inherit the lead when Putnam slowed, but settled for the runner-up position. Rickman explained postrace that he lost power steering near halfway of the 25-lap feature. ... Dalton Cook of Columbus, Ga., finished third. ... After fielding a car for NASCAR driver Chase Briscoe at the Eldora Million, Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., returned to race with the XR Southern All Star Dirt Series and finished fourth. ... Putnam led laps five through 21, before slowing with a straightaway lead and pulled into the infield, relegating him to finish ninth. ... Competing at his home track and leading the first four laps from the outside front row, Neil Baggett slowed and pulled into the infield on lap 15, finishing 13th. ... After earning fast qualifier honors, fellow Columbus native Brian Rickman broke before taking the green flag in his heat race and scratched for the night. ... Saturday's feature, the SAS tour's return to Columbus for the 21st time and first since 2008, was completed without incident and lasted just over 10 minutes.
