Bobby Pierce had his hands full in victory lane at Eldora Speedway.
What won the race: UMP DIRTcar weekly champion Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., jumped out to the lead from the pole position and never relinquished it, leading every lap of the 40-lap UMP Nationals. Pierce earned $5,000 for his victory over Indiana natives Kent Robinson of Bloomington and Scott James of Lawrenceburg.
Quotable: "So many things were going through my mind when I hit the wall like that," said Pierce, who tagged the wall late in the feature. "The Eldora wall, it'll get you. The thing is, you're driving so hard, you can't start to not drive so hard or you'll screw up. Had to keep driving hard ... but man, we did it."
Key notes: Pierce has 16 victories overall in 2014. ... The 17-year-old also won Eldora's Spring Nationals on April 12. ... The feature's lone caution flew with seven laps remaining. ... Only nine cars finished on the lead lap. ... Heat winner Frank Heckenast Jr. of Frankfort, Ill., retired early while running in the top 10. ... Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., made his first start of the season after being sidelined with nerve damage to his hands. Richards made contact with the wall on the opening lap of the first heat race and never recovered. The team made repairs to his Rocket house car in time for a consolation race, but he ultimately fell one spot short of transferring to the main event. ... Retiring Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., was recognized before Saturday's heat races and finished 15th in his final start at Eldora. ... The race was the season finale for Sunoco American Late Model Series East and West competitors and the final UMP DIRTcar points race.
On the move: Robinson charged from 10th to finish second while Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., advanced from ninth to fourth.
Winner's sponsors: The winner drives a Bob Pierce Race with a Pro Power Racing Engine carrying sponsorship from Champion Spark Plugs, Allgayer Inc., M&M Painting and Construction, Murphy Trucking, Petersen Aluminum and the Pierce Posse.
Points chase: Pierce had locked up the ALMS West championship entering Saturday's event; Brandon Thirlby of Traverse City, Mich., is the ALMS East champion.
