From staff reports

BEDFORD, Pa. — Saturday's fifth annual Keystone Cup at Bedford Speedway went decidedly well for Jeff Rine, the Danville, Pa., driver who pocketed a track-record $22,000.

And it wasn't so bad for Shelley Rine, who upon celebrating the couple's 18th wedding anniversary with Jeff on Sunday won't "have to buy him anything" because of his richest career victory.

Bedford Speedway promoter Joe Padula? He's perhaps had better nights after watching Rine start outside the front row and dominate the caution-free 60-lap feature and take the checkers 4.618 seconds ahead of runner-up and polesitter Matt Cosner, removing any drama from the race's outcome in the late stages.

"I know old man Padula hates to to see this," Jeff Rine said in victory lane, "but we got $22,000 in our pocket."

Rine, who won the inaugural Keystone Cup in 2018 and became the race's first two-time winner, turned back a lap-12 challenge from Cosner and third-finishing Gregg Satterlee at the half-mile fairgrounds oval, then edged away from his contenders to dominate the last half of Bedford's richest-ever Super Late Model event with a $70,000 total purse.

The eight-time and reigning track champion's victory was also historic as his 37th triumph at Bedford tied him with Scott Haus of Hamburg, Pa., as the winningest Super Late Model driver in track history.

"Starting position any more in these races is key," said Rine, who beat Cosner into turn one to take command at the outset. "You know, when we had the first Keystone Cup, we started 10th and got the lead about halfway and just drove away. But that's no more. You know, starting position is so (important)."

Cosner, the Ridgely, W.Va., driver who like Rine captured a $2,200 semifeature victory in Friday's prelims, limped home second with a deflating right-rear tire with Satterlee a few seconds back in third. Garrett Smith of Eatonton, Ga., last week's Dirt Track World Championship winner at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park, was fourth in his Bedford debut and Dylan Yoder of Selinsgrove, Pa., rallied from his 19th starting spot to take the fifth spot from Colton Flinner at the finish.

Rine lapped all but eight competitors in capturing a 19-minute race, but he had to keep a cool head through lapped traffic.

"Man oh man, some of them are lappers were tough to get around, but I knew we had a good car from the start," Rine said. "I was just hoping I wasn't killing my tires to get through them. I knew I was hammering my tires and I knew I had to be careful, but yeah, when Matt Cosner's behind you, he rolls that bottom awful good. I knew I could roll the bottom good, but he's been really good at rolling that bottom and I just wanted to keep a little distance between me and him."

Rine, Cosner and Satterlee were in a tight pack for a few laps in the race's early stages, but Rine pulled away and kept a winning pace the rest of the distance.

"I was getting awesome signals from my dad and (with) 10 (laps to go) I seen Ross (Robinson) and Dylan (Yoder)," Rine said. "I was keeping pace with Dylan and he was slicing through lapped traffic just as much as I was. I knew if I kept pace with them, you know, we should be pretty good, because they're really good. ... Man, that was awesome."

Cosner knew his best chance came at the drop of the green flag, but he ended up having to chase Rine throughout the race on a surface that was slicker than drivers expected. The runner-up finish was a "bummer" for Cosner.

"Me and Jeff drove it off into (turn) one extremely hard" on the opening lap, Cosner said. "I drove in there as far as I felt like I could without crashing us and he almost got up there into the wall. But he knew — just like I did — that getting the lead and setting the pace was going to be very important.

"I got right to his quarterpanel a couple of times in traffic, but it just never really played out into my favor. He would pass somebody and they would change lanes and the lapped cars would get to racing. ... When you're lapping cars like (Rick) Eckert and (Kyle) Hardy and Justin Weaver, they're not easy cars to lap for sure."

Any chance Cosner had late in the race went away when his deflating tire hampered his No. 66c.

"It was going down for a little while. I couldn't pass Hardy. And I could tell I was getting a little skatey, but I didn't realize then I was getting a flat," Cosner said. "Then finally I started picking the left-front up. So I was just hoping it would hang on and make it to the finish."

Satterlee said his car "was just a little bit off" and he struggled to get traction on the big track.

"It was just (the track surface) was not really abrasive or latched down very hard like it often does here," he said. "It was just almost slippery all the way around the racetrack; normally it doesn't seem to have that characteristic."

He said he needed "to maneuver through the corners a little bit better. It was kind of slick, so you really needed to be able to get through the corners well to maintain your speed. There wasn't a lot of traction. When the track was really dirty, whenever there was a lots of lapped cars in front of those guys, we were all three really close together."

But when the surface cleaned up, Rine and Cosner pulled back away.

"I just need to be a little bit better," Satterlee said. "But we had a solid third, anyway."

Notes: Rine notched his fourth Bedford victory of the season and 37th of his career. ... Scott Haus won his 37th on June 18, 2010, leading all 25 laps of a race where Rine finished third. ... The event was presented by Bolger Brothers Inc. ... Rine and Cosner earned $2,220 apiece for capturing Friday's twin 20-lap semifeatures. … Saturday’s $70,000 total purse for the Late Model feature was the richest in track history. ... The feature wrapped up before 8 p.m. ... Spike Moore won the Limited Late Model feature over Shawn Shoemaker.
