Riley Hickman celebrates his series title with his third career series victory.
What won the race: Wrapping up his second straight Southern All Star title in style, fifth-starting Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, Tenn., overtook outside front-row starter Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind., on the 37th lap at Cleveland Speedway's Gobbler for a $5,000 victory. Robinson, who led most of the way in his debut at Cleveland, settled for second.
Quotable: "I knew we were fast and had a good race car," Hickman said. "But lapped traffic helped us out a lot there when we got into lapped traffic. We were able to capitalize and get by those guys."
Key notes: Hickman won his fifth race in his last six starts overall; he won $11,000 the previous weekend at Tennessee's Duck River Raceway Park. ... Hickman has 16 victories overall in 2014, including some in Crate and Limited Late Model action. ... Third-place finisher David Payne posted his best career Gobbler finish while making his third start in a Gibson Motorsports-backed Capital Race Car. ... Debuting a new Longhorn Chassis, Alabama driver Dylan Ames finished 13th. ... The season finale rolled just before midnight. ... Fifth-running Derek Ellis lost a left-rear wheel and spun into the backstretch wall on lap 43 (Billy Ogle Jr., who drove a Stacy Boles-owned No. 201, pulled to the pits with steam coming from under his hood during the yellow after damage from the same incident). ... Polesitter Mike Marlar stopped on the second lap for a caution after his car sustained damage by early contact. ... Among drivers failing to make the feature lineup: Skip Arp, Kurt English, Caleb Ashby, Michael Arp, Scott Groves, Rodney Weeks, Bobby Mays, Bo Eaton, Joey Denby, Chad Marchman, Chase Junghans, Donald McIntosh and Tommy Bailey.
On the move: Austin Kirkpatrick of Ocala, Fla., started 12th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Hickman's CVR Race Car is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine with sponsorship from Hickman Manufacturing, MRC Racing Components, American Billet, Tucker Mobile Home Service, VP Racing Fuels, Allstar Graphics and RH Designs.
Points chase: Hickman wrapped up his second straight series title over runner-up Todd Morrow.
