Chris Ferguson pocketed $5,000 for his Trull Memorial victory.
What won the race: Pole-starting Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., survived a late-race scare with a lapped car and held off Ben Watkins of Rock Hill, S.C., for a $5,000 Carolina Clash victory in the 15th annual Skyler Trull Memorial.
Quotable: "That was a fast racetrack tonight," Ferguson said. "That's the fastest I've seen it in a long time in a main event. Man, I'm about out of breath because it was definitely a long race — the last 10 laps had me sweating."
Key notes: Ferguson, who nabbed his seventh Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series win at Carolina Speedway, survived a scary moment with nine laps remaining when he was involved in a turn-two scrape with a lapped car. He felt his right-rear tire "dragging" for the final laps as a result of the contact. ... The right-side door of Ross Bailes's Troy Baird-owned car was damaged when he hit the lapped car that spun from contact with Ferguson, but he continued on to finish fourth. ... After pitting early for a flat tire, Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., came back through the field and took third from Bailes on a restart with two laps to go. ... Seven cautions slowed the action in an attrition-filled race. ... American Racer donated a pair of tires to the 15th-place finisher (Anthony Sanders) and 15th-place qualifier (Scott Shirey). ... The race paid tribute to a 5-year-old Clover, S.C., girl who died from leukemia in 2000. ... Steve Banal of Troutman, N.C., earned $3,000 for a SECA-sanctioned Crate Late Model victory.
On the move: Watkins started 10th and rallied for the runner-up finish.
Winner's sponsors: Ferguson's family-owned Longhorn Chassis machine is powered by a Clements Race Engine and carries sponsorship from Live Oak Family Dentistry, Langley Collision Center, Carver and Sons Roofing, On Site Solutions, and Keith's Handyman.
Points chase: Ferguson tops the Carolina Clash standings with 130 points after one event. Watkins (111), Madden (107), Doug Sanders (104) and Ross Bailes (103) complete the top five.
