Josh Dietz and his team in victory lane at Beckley Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Taking command when leader Hayden Cardwell was swept up in a late-race melee, seventh-starting Josh Dietz of Hebron, Ky., led the final four laps to win Saturday's 14th annual UBB Miners Memorial at Beckley Motor Speedway. Dietz's $15,000 payday represented the most lucrative of his career and his first American All-Star Series victory of the season.
Quotable: “Man, the lap before that (lap-96 melee) I looked up at the scoreboard and saw there was only five laps to go and I was just content running second. We had a heck of a battle trying to get up there,” Dietz said. “I saw them get sideways and it took everything I could to keep the car rolling, not to stall it out. I had knocked it out of gear and knocked it into low and got back on the clutch to get it rolling again. This is gonna go far. We’re just a small team and we have one car, one engine, so getting a payday like this makes our year.”
Key notes: The fourth-starting Cardwell, of Knoxville, Tenn., stalked early pacesetter Zack Dohm until taking command on the lap-68 restart after Dohm pitted with a flat right-front. Cardwell led until getting swept up in the lap-96 melee which began when Dohm and Jack Brown spun while battling for 11th. Cardwell was credited with seventh, while Brown and Dohm were unable to continue. ... A.J. Hicks moved into the runner-up spot on the late-race restart and finished 0.8 of a second behind Dietz. ... Joshua Chesney improved 15 positions and placed fourth. ... The race was slowed by 14 incidents, including two red flags, and lasted just north of two hours. Ten drivers completed 100 laps with 18 running at the checkers, which came at 1:30 a.m. local time. ... Calvin Carlton scratched from the main event lineup. ... The UBB Miners Memorial paid tribute to the 29 miners who lost their lives in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine on April 5, 2010.
On the move: Bailie Lowe of Fletcher, N.C., started 23rd and finished fifth.
