Rodney Melvin (27) beats Ethan Dotson (74) to the line by 0.247 of a second.
What won the race: Fighting off challenges from son-in-law Tanner English before avoiding a last-lap gasp by Ethan Dotson, pole-starting Rodney Melvin of Benton, Ill., earned a flag-to-flag victory in Thursday's 30-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals debut at Riverside International Speedway. Melvin's $5,000 payday marks his eighth career Hell Tour victory and his first since June 20, 2012, at Highland (Ill.) Speedway.
Quotable: “It’s nice, we started up front, kinda pace yourself,” Melvin said. “The lapped cars anymore, they just give you fits. (Thanks to) my boys Jace and Mitch, they’re the only two that help. It’s an awesome deal. I knew (Tanner English) was gonna race me clean. I ain’t gotta worry about him (making contact).”
Key notes: It's Melvin's second $5,000 triumph of the season — May 31 in Ultimate Heart of America Series action at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway — with May's marking his first since 2012 at Highland. ... Eighth-starting Dotson grabbed the runner-up spot on the final lap, taking the checkers 0.247 of a second back. ... English settled for third two nights after from winning the tour's debut in Arkansas at Harrisburg's Old No. 1 Speedway. ... Series rookie Dillon McCowan started and finished fourth, remaining the only driver to start all 16 rounds thus far. ... Australian Late Model champ Joe Chalmers finished seventh aboard the familiar No. 31aus Rocket Chassis formerly piloted by fellow Aussie, Kye Blight. It's Chalmers's second top-10 result — ninth on Tuesday at Old No. 1 — in his first two starts on American soil. ... The race's lone caution came for a solo-spin by 19th-running J.C. Waller on lap seven. He continued to finish 18th, the first driver off the lead lap. ... The Independence Day special lasted 11 minutes, with 19 competitors running at the finish.
On the move: Runner-up finisher Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, Calif., started eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Melvin’s Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Rick’s Towing, ACE Hardware, Thomason Express, M&M Painting & Construction, Midwest Sheet Metal, Penske Racing Shocks and KBC Graphix.
