Garrett Alberson celebrates his second straight WoO victory at Volusia.
What won the race: Restarting out front after a lap-24 caution negated Bobby Pierce's turn-two slide job, polesitter Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., was scored as a 35-lap leader in capturing Thursday's $12,000 Federated DIRTcar Nationals fourth round at Volusia Speedway Park. Alberson beat Pierce to the line by 4.352 seconds for his second straight World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory, the first coming in last month's Sunshine Nationals at Volusia.
Quotable: “We just got a great group right here, ya know … every now and then I’m thinking this track ‘I don’t know if this is really the place for me’ cause some days it’s really tough,” Alberson said. “That’s the hardest I’ve driven in a long time, when I seen (Bobby Pierce) up there on the cushion, I was like ‘I got to go’ … that was everything I had right there.”
Key notes: Garrett Alberson's second Georgia-Florida Speedweek victory came 20 days after his first Volusia victory. ... Fifth-starting Bobby Pierce slid up and under Alberson in turn two to take command on lap 24, but Nick Hoffman pounded the frontstretch wall while battling Tyler Erb back in the pack to draw a yellow before a lap was scored. That reset Alberson as the leader and he led the rest of the 35-lapper. ... Pierce traded sliders with Devin Moran for second on the final lap, with Pierce crossing the line 0.356 of a second ahead. ... Pierce, Moran and 10th-starting Ethan Dotson got by fast qualifier Ricky Thornton Jr. late after Thornton jumped the turn-three cushion with two laps remaining. ... Mike Marlar trailed Alberson for the opening 11 laps before fading to 14th. ... Cade Dillard finished 19th aboard his backup car after losing power steering in the first consolation. ... Hoffman's wreck drew the second caution; the first came on lap 12 when Mark Whitener and Brent Larson slowed before retiring. ... The main event lasted 19 minutes, with 23 starters completing 35 laps. ... Jimmy Owens and Trey Mills were OK after a hard crash on an early-race restart in the second consy. Owens and Dan Ebert made contact, sending Owens hard into the inside frontstretch wall, detaching his left-front wheel before he slid up and collected Mills. … WoO action continues Friday and Saturday.
On the move: Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, started 11th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Alberson's Roberts Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Mesilla Valley Transportation, Low Voltage Solutions, Done Right TV, Bill's Sport Shop, Roemer Machine & Welding, Sims Family Racing, Capitol Screen Company, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Mitchell Ranch, J. Pre-race notes

Thursday has brought an end to the run of picture-perfect weather during Speedweeks with rain entering the picture for the first during the DIRTcar Nationals. Temperatures remained balmy (the afternoon high reached the upper 80s) but pockets of showers developed with one short but heavy burst hitting the track around 4 p.m., delaying the start of the evening’s WoO program. While dark clouds have continued to periodically threaten the speedway, track crews began working on the track around 5:30 p.m. and all Dirt Late Model and big-block modified cars were summoned at 6:15 p.m. to help finish running it in. … Fifty-eight cars are signed in for Thursday’s action. The field is down three entries from Wednesday but still well above last year’s week-high total of 48 cars. … A new arrival for the final three nights of the DCN is Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., who parked his hauler alongside his Coltman Farms Racing teammate Tanner English of Benton, Ky. … Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., expressed optimism for the trio of WoO features on tap after winning Wednesday’s second Triple 20 semifeature. “Normally when I come to Volusia I’m always too tight and can’t turn, so I’ve been on the edge of being too free every night and we went a little overboard (tightening the car),” said Davenport, who recorded his first Volusia victory since 2018. “Hopefully this just shows us where we need to be for the longer features.” … Kyle Bronson of Brandon, Fla., had his promising run in Wednesday’s first semifeature doomed by a loss of brakes on lap two and a backstretch scrape with Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., on the eighth lap. He briefly ran third before retiring after the contact with Blair. … Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., started Wednesday’s third semifeature at the rear after he reported late to the track because his car backfired and then shut off in the pit area. He managed to turn one lap before retiring to diagnose the problem, which appeared to be caused by a malfunction in the electrical system that his crew hopes to have solved by replacing the coil selector. … WoO rookie Jake Timm of Winona, Minn., is ready to resume tour action after being eliminated from Wednesday’s second semifeature by terminal motor woes.
