Devin Moran won $12,000 Friday for his sixth career Volusia victory.
What won the race: Sliding by race-long leader Ricky Thornton Jr. as they entered turn three on the 19th lap, eighth-starting Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, led the rest of Friday's 35-lap Federated DIRTcar Nationals fifth round at Volusia Speedway Park. Moran raced to the $12,000 payday by 1.135 seconds over Jonathan Davenport for his 14th career World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory and his first since topping last year's DIRTcar Nationals finale at Volusia.
Quotable: “This is the Volusia I love, when it’s technical, there’s a curb, you gotta run the bottom and you could pass and maneuver. I mean, I started eighth and came up through there,” Moran said. “I think the rain last night kinda showed ‘em that they needed to put a little moisture on it and they did great job with the track tonight and it just let me maneuver with a great racecar to get up through there.”
Key notes: Devin Moran notched his sixth career Volusia victory, increasing his total earnings to more than $66,000 at the half-mile. ... It's his fourth overall win of the season and his 13th career Georgia-Florida Speedweeks triumph. ... Fifth-starting Jonathan Davenport grabbed the runner-up spot from Ricky Thornton Jr. on a lap-20 restart and trailed Moran the rest of the way. ... Thornton led the opening 18 laps, including when he hopped-the turn one cushion on lap 12, leaving second-running Ethan Dotson nowhere to go. Dotson's right-rear slammed into Thornton's left-front, breaking a shock mount and ending Dotson's race. ... Thornton soldieried on despite steering difficulties the rest of the way. ... It was Thornton's third straight fast qualifier award dating back to Wednesday's split-field program. ... Polesitter Garrett Alberson, Thursday winner, was fourth. ... Brandon Sheppard shredded a right-rear tire on the last lap and coasted across the line in 13th. ... Several drivers drew cautions as they negotiated Volusia's tricky cushion, including fourth-running Bobby Pierce who hopped it in turn four, collided with Sheppard and spun after a lap-seven restart. ... Cody Overton and Tyler Bruening both continued after hopping the turn-four cushion on lap 16. ... Brandon Overton also left the racing surface on lap 20 after Carson Ferguson threw a daring turn-three slider as they battled for ninth. ... Tristan Chamberlain and Mark Whitener slowed for early cautions. ... The 35-lapper was slowed by five incidents and lasted 28 minutes, with 20 starters completing the distance. ... Kyle Strickler failed to transfer out of a consolation after a nosepiece-width violation cost him a transfer spot in the second heat race. ... Jimmy Owens failed to qualify aboard his backup following Thursday night's hard crash. ... The DIRTcar Nationals conclude with Saturday's 50-lap, $20,000-to-win event.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 20th and finished seventh.

The race’s lone caution came on lap five when Derrick Stewart over-rotated and spun from fourth. Pre-race notes

Following a late ending to Thursday’s action (12:13 a.m. checkered flag for the WoO feature) due to a 90-minute rain delay, Friday’s Federated DIRTcar Nationals is running under cloudy and cooler conditions. The run of 80-degree days has ended with Friday’s high temperature only reaching the low 70s. … Fifty-eight cars are signed in for the second of three WoO events to close the week. … Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., is hoping he’s corrected the mysterious electrical problem that has plagued his efforts the last two nights. His team considered changing engines after being unable to diagnose why his SSI Motorsports machine continues to sputter or not run at all, but they decided to forego a swap and instead replace a host of components. … Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., is running one of his Rocket Chassis from last year after his self-designed machine was demolished in a fierce Thursday B-main crash that saw him pound the inside wall on the homestretch left-front first and then absorb a hard hit to his right side from teenager Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla. The 53-year-old escaped the accident without serious injury. … Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., scored his week-best sixth-place finish on Thursday driving a new Rocket Chassis house car. … Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., has returned to the Tye Twarog-owned Longhorn Chassis that he ran in last month’s Sunshine Nationals at Volusia after the machine he drove the first four nights of the week — highlighted by a victory in Monday’s opener — was damaged in a feature wreck on Thursday. … Cade Dillard of Robeline, La., was forced to start his white backup car in Thursday’s feature after power steering trouble struck in his red primary mount during a B-main, but he’s back behind the wheel of the red No. 97 for Friday’s action after making repairs.
