Tyler Erb spooned up success at Spoon River Speedway.
What won the race: Second-starting Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, fired off from the outside front row and dominated Wednesday's 30-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature at Spoon River Speedway. Terbo took the checkers 0.890 of a second ahead of Bob Gardner for the $5,000 payday, his fifth Summer Nationals win of the season and 20th of his career.
Quotable: “It wasn’t the most exciting race from my point of view, but you get a chance to win races like this when you qualify good and win your heat race, so we did everything correct in that matter,” Erb said. “It was a really good night for our team, really fun. I enjoy Spoon River, I’ve never won a race here. This is really cool. (I’m) happy that everybody came out and supported us tonight, sorry I didn’t get to blow it around the cushion all night, or nothing.”
Key notes: Erb earned his fifth Hell Tour victory of the season, all of them coming in his last 11 series starts (since June 19). ... It's his first Spoon River victory and ninth overall in 2025. ... Bob Gardner slipped by Rodney Melvin for second on a lap-six restart, but never truly threatened Erb's lead over the final 25 laps that went uninterrupted. ... The pole-starting Melvin, of Benton, Ill., faded to fourth after giving up third to Tyler Millwood on the seventh lap. ... Brothers Brody and Brenden Smith finished 13th and 14th after sharing the sixth starting row. ... Dylan Thornton finished 20th, the final starter to complete 30 laps; Thornton transferred through the night's B-main after slowing during time trials. ... The race's lone caution came on lap six when Dillon McCowan spun while battling Eli Johnson for 18th; both continued with Johnson finishing 17th and McCowan in 19th. ... Blaze Burwell (lap 16) and A.J. May (lap 12) were the only retirees. ... Kyle Hammer charged from 14th-to-fourth in the B-main, missing the transfer by a spot after scratching from all other prelims in Steve Sheppard's No. 5s Rocket Chassis. ... Kyle Bronson has fallen off the Summer Nationals tour, leaving 11 drivers that have attempted all 18 rounds thus far.
On the move: Mike Spatola of Manhattan, Ill., started 16th and finished 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Erb’s winning Best Performance Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Langenfelder Mechanical Contractors, Bulk Material Lift, First Class Septic, Roberts Bee Company, Anthony’s Pizza, JRR Trucking, Base Racing Fuel, Base Oil, Sani-Weld, Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Racing Shocks, Go Lithium Batteries, Midwest Sheet Metal, Terbo Threads and KBC Graphix.
