What won the race: Controlling all but one circuit, Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., triumphed in Friday's 40-lap Great Lakes Border Battle opener at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior, Wis., for $3,000 on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series. Runner-up Shane Sabraski challenged Doar in the closing laps but finished a half-second behind.
Quotable: "They got me feeling tonight. That heat race about did me in. I didn't know where to be in the feature. I'd see a nose (from a car behind), and I'd move," Doar said. "The track was patching around. Finally, just gave up on trying to block, and I think that's where I got away from him. I just started running my own lane, and if they wanted to pass me, they could."
Key notes: Racing his first series feature since May 10, Doar, the tour's all-time wins leader, collected his 43rd Challenge Series victory. ... Polesitter Billy Kendall led the second lap, the only one not led by Doar. ... Doar and Kendall battled hard for the lead in the opening laps, racing side-by-side with margins of 0.050, 0.125, 0.017 and 0.076 seconds in the first four laps. ... Kendall, who eventually finished sixth, fell to third on lap five as Sabraski emerged as Doar’s closest challenger, pursuing Doar the final 35 laps. Sabraski never trailed by more than 0.802 seconds the final 14 laps and pulled alongside Doar for the lead on lap nine. … Three cautions slowed the 21-minute feature: Lap six for Devin Fouquette and Mike Bellefeuille, who tangled battling for 18th in turn two; lap 27 for 13th-running Joel Bennett, who slowed in turn two; and lap 30 for Adam Ayotte, who spun out of 17th in turn four. … Nineteen starters completed 40 laps. ... Taylor Madrinich and Kevin Carlson tangled in the night's B-main, with Madrinich's car getting upside down and landing on top of Carlson's machine. Both drivers were OK, but it took track officials several minutes for cleanup. ... WCS competitors return for Saturday’s identical $3,000-to-win show in the ninth annual event.
On the move: Jeff Massingill of Keewatin, Minn., started 12th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Doar’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Tri Star Engines and Transmissions, Kivi Brothers Trucking, I-29 Trailer Sales, Polar Industries and Speedwerx Performance Exhaust.
