What won the race: Grabbing the lead from Jonathan Davenport on lap 44 and then turning back a late challenge from the three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion, Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., emerged victorious in Saturday’s 60-lap Freedom 60 at Muskingum County Speedway. The 24-year-old earned a $25,000 top prize for his third Lucas Oil triumph of the season and second Freedom 60 win in three years.
Quotable: “That was just the advantage of not being out leading like Jonathan was,” O’Neal said. “I was able to kind of try some lines there and I found that bottom, and at first, whenever I tried it, it didn’t quite have the speed to drive all the way to the lead. But as that top slowed down I just kept getting a little better and a little better.”
Key notes: O’Neal, who scored his 29th career full-field Lucas Oil win, recorded his two previous victories on the tour this season in May 22-23’s Show-Me 100 prelims at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. … Davenport, who led laps 9-43, crossed the finish line 0.515 of a second behind O’Neal but was disqualified to 25th place after he failed the post-race deck height check because his car’s droop limiter chain wasn’t tight. … Davenport’s penalty moved Garrett Alberson to the runner-up spot and gave third place to Brandon Sheppard, who led laps 1-8. … Ricky Thornton Jr. finished fourth and took over the Lucas Oil points lead after Davenport's penalty. ... Five caution flags slowed the feature. … Daniel Hilsabeck triggered the first caution on lap 11 due to a flat left-rear tire. … Freddie Carpenter went off the track in turns three and four for a lap-14 caution and three circuits later was involved in a turn-two tangle with Cory Workman. … Caiden Black’s engine overheated for a lap-30 stoppage. … Carson Ferguson relinquished eighth for a flat right-rear tire on lap 52. … Devin Moran reached fifth by lap 30 but mangled his car's spoiler after the mid-race restart and faded dramatically. He pitted during the lap-52 caution and finished 17th. ... Nathon Loney started last using a provisional starting position from winning June 14’s local Super Late Model show at Muskingum County. He marched forward to finish sixth. … Donald McIntosh captured the second heat after his qualifying run saw him him nearly leave the track surface and spin because his brake line became disconnected from the master cylinder. ... Hot laps were pushed back to 6:30 p.m. local time because of a high heat index. ... The 60-lap main event lasted 33 minutes, with 13 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Nathon Loney of Danville, Ohio, started 25th and finished sixth.
