Jimmy Owens shows off his big paycheck at Senoia Raceway.
What won the race: Taking advantage when Joseph Joiner hopped the turn-two cushion on lap 42, fifth-starting Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., paced the final nine circuits to capture Saturday's 50-lap Independence Shootout at Senoia Raceway. Owens stretched his lead in the final laps, winning by 2.988 seconds over Joiner for his fourth career Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series victory, second this season and second at Senoia.
Quotable: “It was a good night. It’s just a lot of tire games out there, everybody had a little different combination. We’d fire off once and it’d take off and run good and the next lap, it’d be a little skatey and all that stuff,” Owens said. “My whole (team), everybody’s did such a good job out here working in this heat. It’s good to come home with a win.”
Key notes: Points leader Owens notched his second career $10,000 Independence Shootout triumph (2023). ... His earlier series victory came May 16 at Georgia's Sugar Creek Raceway, worth $8,000. ... Owens's fourth career HTF victory breaks a seven-way tie and lifts him to the tour's all-time lead. ... Fourth-starting Joseph Joiner led laps 6-41 before nearly hitting the wall when he hopped the turn-two cushion on lap 42, allowing Owens to slip by. ... Cory Hedgecock and Michael Page tangled heading for towards the checkers with Hedgecock crossing the line in third and Page appearing to finish sixth; Page was later disqualified for ramming into Hedgecock's car on the cool-down lap, pushing the No. 23 car nose-first into the backstretch wall and nearly turning it over. ... Both drivers exited their cars and engaged in a physical brawl as several crew members and onlookers became involved in the scrum. ... Page, who led the opening five laps from the pole, was dropped to 24th in the final rundown. ... Josh Putnam slowed and retired from eighth (broken left-front shock mount) on lap 32, drawing the race's third caution. ... The first stoppage came on lap 27 when Ashton Winger made contact with Zack Mitchell as they battled for third, sending Winger hard into the frontstretch inner wall and ending his night. ... Austin Horton drove a Kirk Atkins-owned car using a Mopar hemi super engine. ... The main event was slowed by four incidents and lasted 31 minutes, with 12 starters completing 50 laps. ... Three individuals were injured when a 604 Crate Late Model climbed the turn-four wall and damaged a section of fence near the track's entrance-exit; a lengthy delay ensued for fence repair and medical professionals rendering treatment. Two were taken to a local hospital, including one man with possible head injuries; both were treated and released, the track reported Sunday afternoon.
On the move: Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, Tenn., started 21st and finished 10th.
