Shannon Babb's 102nd series victory, and seventh at Tri-State, are tops in Summer Nationals history.
What won the race: Leading all 40 laps, Shannon Babb Moweaqua, Ill., regained the mantle as the tour's all-time winningest driver Saturday at Tri-State Speedway for a $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. Babb's 102nd Hell Tour victory — his seventh series win at Tri-State — came 1.306 seconds ahead of Mark Whitener, who made a late bid for the lead on the final restart. Babb's victory put him back ahead of Hall of Famer Billy Moyer, who last month tied Babb with his 101st victory in the tour's opener in Brownstown, Ill.
Quotable: "The Helfrich family gets us one heck of a place to race at," Babb said. "The effort and (perspective) that they see of what a racetrack should be like is unreal, and I guess it's always fit my style," the 51-year-old Babb said. "I'll tell you one thing, I'm getting way too old for that, but it's a torture test."
Key notes: Shannon Babb led by more than two seconds during portions of the 40-lapper. ... It was the site of his first-ever series victory in 1999 and also won at the track in '01, '11, '13, '15 and '18. ... Iron-Man Series points leader Colten Burdette ran second most of the way but lost a spot to Mark Whitener late. ... Three cautions slowed the action, the first on lap 14 when an infield cone was knocked onto the racing surface. ... Kyle Hammer spun in turn four for a lap-35 caution. ... The final yellow appeared when Rodney Melvin got into the outside wall in turn two on the 39th lap; his car was towed away during a lengthy delay. ... The feature rolled about 10:05 p.m. and concluded about 10:27 p.m. ... Jackson Hise scratched from the feature. ... The fourth week on the Summer Nationals concludes Sunday at Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel, Tenn. ... Tri-State's event was co-sanctioned by the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series.
On the move: Clay Stuckey of Shreveport, La., started 20th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Babb’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Petroff Towing, Dynagro Seed, CJI Piping & Fabrication, Donley Trucking, Getty Landscaping, Douglas Dodge Ram, Kuebler Ultra Oil, VP Racing Fuels and Penske Racing Shocks.
Points chase: Summer Nationals Week 4 after Tri-State: 1. Mark Whitener (331); 2. Jason Feger (327); 3. Tyler Erb (321); 4. Tyler Millwood (287); 5. Dillon McCowan (281). Iron-Man before Mudlick Valley Thursday: 1. Colten Burdette (433); 2. Rusty Schlenk (425); 3. Rod Conley (320); 4. Clint Keenan (303); 5. Seth Daniels (292).
