Brandon Overton celebrates a victory in the National 100 opener.
What won the race: Taking command from pole-starting Tyler Erb on the 18th circuit, Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., paced the rest of Friday's 30-lap National 100 first preliminary feature at East Alabama Motor Speedway. The two-time event winner took the checkers 1.273 seconds ahead of Mark Whitener for the $5,000 payday and his fourth overall feature win of the season.
Key notes: Overton captured his first victory since May 2 at Indiana's Circle City Raceway in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series action, worth $15,000. ... Mark Whitener started and finished second, reclaiming the runner-up spot from Tyler Erb after a lap-18 restart. ... Erb, last year's National 100 winner, led the opening 17 laps from the pole before settling for third. ... EAMS track champ Dalton Cook fell one position to finish fourth. ... Dennis Erb Jr. climbed four positions to finish eighth. ... Ninth-running Daulton Wilson blew a left-rear tire with four laps remaining to bring out the fifth and final stoppage. The Fayetteville, N.C. driver was able to continue, finishing 12th in the Big Frog Motorsports entry. ... J.R. Moseley slowed to bring out a caution on lap 18, triggering a pair of additional yellow flags on ensuring restart attempts. ... Montana Dudley retired on the second circuit. ... Hadley Greene was the race's first retiree. ... The 30-lapper lasted 20 minutes with 14 competitors running at the finish. ... Brody Smith and Todd Morrow scratched. ... The three-day program continues with Saturday’s $10,000-to-win second prelim before culminating with Sunday’s $30,000-to-win finale. The top 16 points earners after both prelims will be locked into Sunday’s 100-lap main event.
