Jonathan Davenport (49) outdueled Hudson O'Neal (6) to win $25,000.
What won the race: Reclaiming control for good with a turn-one slider by Hudson O'Neal on lap 45, second-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., led the final six laps unchallenged in winning Saturday's $25,000 19th annual World Finals finale at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Davenport beat O'Neal to the line by 0.607 of a second for his third World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series victory of the season and 18th of his career.
Quotable: “I just kinda got stalled out behind those lapped cars and then I could hear somebody under me and finally saw Hudson (O’Neal) there,” Davenport said. “He got by me and I’m just like ‘try to stay calm here and try to stay patient with him’ if I could and I saw he was pushing it pretty hard through the lapped cars and everything. He got tailed out a couple times off of (turn) four here so I knew that got his tires hot and that just gave me a great opportunity and we was just playing chess through the lapped cars there, from then on.”
Key notes: Davenport led 38 of 50 laps (1-31, 34, 45-50) for his second victory in as many nights and his eighth career World Finals triumph, breaking a tie with Jimmy Owens for the most in event history. ... Hudson O'Neal remained within striking distance through the race's first half before sliding by Davenport to lead laps 32-33; Davenport retook control with a turn-three slider on lap 34, only for O'Neal to slide back by him entering turn one on lap 35. ... O'Neal led twice for 12 laps (32-33, 35-44) before fading back at the checkers. ... Drake Troutman held third for the entire distance and narrowly claimed sixth in the final standings by eight points over Brian Shirley. ... Fourth-finishing Brandon Sheppard powered around Tyler Erb on lap 34, relegating Erb to finish fifth. ... Defending World Finals winner Chris Madden worked his way as high as fifth in the early going before slipping to eighth. ... Bobby Pierce capped a rare non-competitive weekend with a 23rd-place finish after clinching his second career World of Outlaws title (2023). ... Ricky Thornton Jr. fought mechanical issues and retired on the sixth lap. ... The green-to-checkered feature lasted 15 minutes with 18 starters completing 50 laps.
On the move: Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., started 21st and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Davenport’s Double L Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Dynagro Seed, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing & HVAC, Bobcat of Batesville, Bert Transmissions by Budda, Lucas Oil, Hoosier Racing Tire, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein Shocks and Midwest Sheet Metal.
