What won the race: Powering around David Payne as they raced amid heavy lapped traffic, fourth-starting Kyle Courtney of Knoxville, Tenn., led the final 12 laps to win Saturday's 40-lap Bill & Frank Ingram Memorial at North Georgia Speedway. Courtney repelled a last-lap gasp by John Ownbey and beat him by 0.367 of a second for his second career Jail Breaker Potato Chips Topless Outlaw Series victory, worth $5,009, the most lucrative victory of his career.
Quotable: “Man, that right there, that is the biggest win of my career,” Courtney said. “This is what we work for, is this right here and I’m fortunate enough to have the people behind me. It ain’t really set in yet that I just won five grand.”
Key notes: Courtney's last Topless Outlaw victory came on May 22, 2020, a $2,500 triumph at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. ... Courtney notched his fourth overall victory of the season. ... Second-starting John Ownbey led the opening 20 laps before slipping to third, then regained the runner-up spot from David Payne on a lap-30 restart. Ownbey cut more than 0.6 of a second off Courtney's lead on the final lap. ... The pole-starting Payne, of Murphy, N.C., led laps 21-28 before Courtney powered around the outside just prior to the race's fourth and final caution on lap 30 when Barrett Lowe slowed from eighth. Payne settled for third, while Lowe did not continue. ... Austin Horton prevailed to finish fourth after a back-and-forth battle with Zach Sise. ... Layne Clifton gained 11 spots to place eighth. ... Jordan Judge slowed from seventh to trigger the third yellow flag on lap 19. ... Rucker Orr spun on lap 12, collecting Tyler Nichols; Orr continued to finish 16th, while Nichols retired a dozen laps later. ... Ronnie Johnson, Blake Craft and Bobby Giffin were eliminated in a multicar crash on the second lap. ... The Topless Outlaw season opener lasted 25 minutes, with 15 starters completing 40 laps. ... The event honored Bill and Frank Ingram, of Acworth, Ga., fixtures among the North Georgia region, with each earning multiple feature victories over the years; Bill won 1990’s inaugural Dixie Shootout at Woodstock, Ga.’s Dixie Speedway; Frank topped 1994’s fifth-annual Gobbler at Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway.
On the move: Drew Collins of Auburn, Ga., started 23rd and finished 10th.
