What won the race: Taking control when leaders Kyle Strickler and Camaron Marlar were collected by a spinning lapped car on lap 22, fourth-starting Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., repelled repeated challenges from Jason Jameson to lead the rest of Saturday's 53-lap Johnny Wheeler Memorial at Lake Cumberland Speedway. Mitchell beat Jameson by 0.621 of a second for the $10,031 payday, his first career Schaeffer's Spring Nationals victory and second feature win of the season.
Key notes: Mitchell led the final 32 laps for his second win of the season, adding to April 10's Hunt the Front Series triumph at Chatsworth's North Georgia Speedway, worth $8,000. ... Tenth-starting Jason Jameson, who inherited the runner up spot on the lap-22 restart, pressured Mitchell the rest of the way with both drivers trading slide jobs on a lap-37 restart as Mitchell maintained control. ... Mike Marlar, winner of Friday's Spring Nationals weekend opener at nearby Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky., improved five positions to round out the podium finishers. ... Points leader Garrett Smith, who started ninth after suffering a flat tire while leading the night's first heat race, gained four spots to finish fifth. ... Second-starting Kyle Strickler led the opening 21 laps before he, second-running Camaron Marlar, seventh-running Kaede Loudy and 12th-running Oakley Johns were swept up in a turn-three pileup when the lapped car of Alex Vance spun in front of the field. Vance retired and was credited with 15th while Strickler completed a handful more laps before pulling off. ... Loudy, who was also swept up in someone else's mess the previous night, rebounded to finish sixth with the younger Marlar behind him in seventh. ... Michael Chilton ran as high as fifth in the early going before slipping to ninth at the checkers. ... The 53-lap feature was slowed by four cautions, none bigger than Benji Hicks's frontstretch flip on the 45th lap, necessitating a 10-minute red flag for cleanup; Hicks was OK. ... Matthew Brocato and Jack Franklin tangled to draw the third stoppage on lap 37. ... Justin Rattliff slowed before completing a lap to trigger the opening yellow. ... The event honored Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, Ky., a champion at a number of Kentucky tracks, including Lake Cumberland, who died on May 29, 2018, at the age of 54. ... Ten starters completed the distance in the 36-minute main event.
On the move: Jadon Frame of Winchester, Tenn., started 15th and finished fourth.
