Ryan Unzicker held off Jason Feger for his second MARS win of the season.
What won the race: Holding off a flurry of challenges from Jason Feger over the final 10 laps, third-starting Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., led all 40 laps of Saturday's MARS Late Model Championship Series-sanctioned Triple Down Shootout at Fairbury Speedway. In a reversal of fortunes from the previous night, Unzicker beat Feger by 0.275 of a second for the $5,000 payday, his 18th career MARS Series victory and second of the season.
Quotable: “Man, what a show right there boys. Jason (Feger) and I, we’ve put on a lot of battles and that one right there, he made me nervous. I kept seeing him and I appreciate him running me clean,” Unzicker said. “We definitely run each other clean, I think, and that’s what you pay your money to come to this racetrack right here, it’s one of the best ones in the country that we go to.”
Key notes: Unzicker, who nipped Bob Gardner by 0.028 of a second to win the night's third heat race, added to his April 25 Garry Swibold Memorial victory at nearby Peoria (Ill.) Speedway, worth $5,098. ... Unzicker challenged Jason Feger in the late going of Friday's MARS weekend opener at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway before Feger pulled away for the win. ... Unzicker's 18th career MARS victory breaks a tie with Tanner English for 10th on the Midwest tour's all-time list. ... The pole-starting English faded to finish seventh. ... Local racer McKay Wenger came home third after pressuring Unzicker for much of the opening 30 laps. ... Feger used the middle line to take second from Wenger on lap 29 before focusing his sights on Unzicker over the final 10 circuits. ... Shannon Babb battled Wenger for second in the early going before slipping to eighth at the checkers. ... B-main winner Jake Little gained six positions and rounded out the top-10 finishers. ... World of Outlaws regular Ryan Gustin retired from 13th under green on lap 12. ... The lone stoppage was a 10-minute red flag when seventh-running Caden McWhorter climbed the turn-one wall and nosed into the catch fence before rolling over onto his roof; McWhorter was OK but the No. 99 Curless Motorsports entry needed the attention from two wreckers in getting 'floated' back to the pits. ... The 40-lapper lasted 11 mintues with 13 starters completing the distance and 17 running at the finish. ... The MARS Memorial Day weekend concludes with Sunday's $5,000-to-win program Spoon River Speedway in Banner, Ill.
On the move: Runner-up finisher Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., started ninth.
