What won the race: Blasting around early leader Daniel Adam with a third-to-first move on the second lap, fourth-starting Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., led the rest of Sunday's 40-lap MARS Late Model Championship Series feature at Spoon River Speedway. Babb beat Ryan Unzicker to the checkers by 2.277 seconds for the $5,000 payday, his first feature win of the season and 12th career MARS victory.
Quotable: “It feels great. It’s been a long time since we’ve won a race here at Spoon River and I love this place, I love all the fans for coming out,” Babb said. “Man I wanted to jump off the top of my trailer last night, we started front row and laid back clear up. I called the decisions on what (changes) to do to the car and it was completely wrong. We learned our boundaries and tonight we went the other direction and, my God, it was excellent.”
Key notes: Babb remained loyal to Spoon River's cushion in leading the final 39 laps for his first MARS victory since last May 17 at Highland (Ill.) Speedway, also worth $5,000. ... It's his first win of any kind since last July 5's DIRTcar Summer Nationals triumph at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., and his first Spoon River victory since June 25, 2018's Summer Nationals visit. ... Polesitter Daniel Adam led the opening lap before giving way to Babb, then pursued the race winner for the next 35 circuits before surrendering second to points leader Ryan Unzicker on lap 37; Adam settled for third. ... The fifth-starting Unzicker, of El Paso, Ill., quickly moved to third by lap seven, but tangled with a lapped car and nearly spun on the 25th lap, allowing Tanner English and Bob Gardner to slip back by. Unzicker then rallied to regain third by lap 31 and took second from Adam a handful of laps later. ... Second-starting Bob Gardner, who ran No. 64 as a tribute to Gary Cook Jr. whom the night's modified race honored, faded to seventh at the finish. ... Caden McWhorter bounced back after a rollover crash Saturday at nearby Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway and placed 12th as the final starter to complete 40 laps. ... The non-stop feature lasted just shy of 11 minutes with 17 starters running at the finish.
On the move: Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., started 13th and finished sixth.
