What won the race: Inheriting command for a lap-37 restart after race-long leader Max Blair was eliminated in a tangle with a slower car, sixth-starting Dave Hess Jr. of Waterford, Pa., led the final 14 laps of Sunday's fifth annual Andy Kania Memorial for a $7,676 Super Late Model victory at Eriez Speedway. Hess beat Greg Oakes by 2.984 seconds for his second win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval.
Key notes: Lucas Oil Series regular Max Blair, seeking his fifth consecutive Kania Memorial victory, led the opening 36 laps from the pole before retiring under the race's fifth and final caution on lap 37. Brock Pinkerous, who ran second in the early going before pitting under a lap-12 caution, also retired while running 17th under the lap-37 stoppage. ... Hess led the final 14 laps unchallenged for his second Eriez victory this season, adding to his win in May 17's season opener. ... It's his first major victory since last fall's September Sweep finale there, worth $5,000. ... Hess now has 13 career Eriez specials going back to 2011, worth more than $60,000. ... Greg Oakes and Darrell Bossard rounded out the podium finishers following Blair's early exit. ... Bob Dorman improved 10 positions to place seventh. ... Besides the cautions for Blair and Pinkerous, other notable yellow flags came on lap nine where Eric Wilson and Bump Hedman were eliminated as the battled inside the top 10. ... The event honored Andy Kania, a longtime racer and Eriez regular who retired to become crew chief for his son, Steve, who finished sixth; Andy died on Oct. 21, 2021, after a brief illness. ... Eriez is scheduled to host its annual two-day September Sweep event on Sept. 18-19, culminating with a $6,500-to-win finale for unsanctioned Supers.
