Pre-race notes
Dream week at Eldora begins with the $20,000-to-win FloRacing Night in America event run under superb weather conditions: skies are clear and the afternoon high reached 80 degrees. … The 84-car field — almost assuredly the largest car count for a one-day Super Late Model show this season — is just one entry less than last year’s FloRacing Night turnout. … Bobby Pierce, who won last year’s Flo Night to open the Dream week, is parked in the upper pit area after arriving just two haulers too late to gain entry to the infield. His departure from Oakwood, Ill., was delayed until 7 a.m. this morning because he had to finish up the new Longhorn Chassis he’s debuting this weekend. … Pierce is one of several drivers running new red, white and blue wraps, joining Brandon Overton (a special scheme celebrating sponsor Budweiser’s 150th anniversary), Drake Troutman and Ethan Dotson. … Dillon McCowan feared his plans to run the Dream would be derailed when his team’s hauler went into limp mode due to a bad DPF sensor shortly after they left Urbana, Mo., on Monday night, leaving them stranded in a Walmart parking lot. They arranged for a service truck to visit them on Tuesday and they were back on the road by afternoon and pulled into Eldora’s pit area around midnight. … NASCAR star Carson Hocevar is behind the wheel of his new-look Chile’s-sponsored No. 77 tonight and for Thursday’s Dream preliminary. … Lane Snook, a rising 18-year-old from Port Royal, Pa., is a surprise Dream week entrant after landing an opportunity to one of Maryland team owner Bruce Kane’s No. 15K machines as a teammate to Georgian Wil Herrington. … Tyler Erb’s Best Performance Motorsports car sports the No. 51 and a black wrap that resembles the Rowdy Burns car from the Days of Thunder movie in a tribute to the late Kyle Busch, who was known as “Rowdy” and drove a similar-appearing black No. 51 to a Snowball Derby victory. … Jimmy Owens, the 2009 Dream winner, is behind the wheel of a McCarter Brothers Motorsports MasterSbilt machine carrying his familiar No. 20. … Ryan Gustin has opted to run tonight’s program in his Todd Cooney Motorsport team’s Infinity Chassis. … Florida’s Brenden Smith is back in his family-owned equipment after a recent split with JCM Motorsports. … Benji Hicks is entered with the same Double Nickel Chassis that he flipped on May 9 at Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland Speedway. He said the machine wasn’t as badly damaged as he had initially feared. … Georgia’s Dalton Cook is making his first attempt at the Dream. He failed to qualify for last year’s World 100 in his only previous crown jewel appearance at Eldora.
