What won the race: Cade Dillard of Robeline, La., fired off from the outside front row and overcame mid-race contact with polesitter Kyle Beard to lead all 20 laps of Friday's fourth annual Hayden Ross Memorial prelim at Thunderbird Speedway. Dillard beat Jon Mitchell by 1.139 seconds for the $5,066 payday co-sanctioned among the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series, Nutrien Ag Revival Super Dirt Series and Ross Foundation Sooner Late Model Series.
Key notes: Dillard notched his eighth win of the season, his sixth on the Comp Cams circuit and 13th of his career. ... It was his fourth Revival Series win this season and sixth-career on the third-year Midwest tour. ... Dillard led largely unchallenged save for a mid-race move where Kyle Beard showed his nose under Dillard just as Dillard was aimed for the bottom of the track. The two came together at the exit of turn two with Beard's right-front tire clipping Dillard's left side and sending Beard spinning for the race's third caution; Beard retired and was credited with 16th. ... Jon Mitchell inherited the runner-up spot on the lap-10 restart but never seriously challenged Dillard over the race's second half. ... Terry Phillips improved six positions to finish fourth. ... Billy Moyer, winner of 2023's inaugural Hayden Ross Memorial, climbed seven spots to place sixth. ... Besides the lap-10 caution for Beard's spin, the race was slowed three other times, first on the third lap when Drew Armstrong slowed and retired. ... Clay Stuckey slowed from 11th with a flat tire on the fourth lap and pulled off. ... Ryan Johnson slowed from sixth and retired on lap 11 for the final slowdown. ... The event honors Hayden Ross of Muskogee, Okla., who tragically died in October of 2022 at the age of 20 and was posthumously crowned the 2022 Sooner Series champion. ... Hayden's younger brother, Eli Ross, was running as high as third when he jumped the turn-one cushion on the third lap and called it a night. ... The attrition-filled prelim was cut to 20 laps (from 33) and lasted 18 minutes with 13 starters running at the finish; the race ended just after 12:30 a.m. ... Timothy Culp scratched. ... The two-day program concludes with Saturday's 30-lap, $10,066-to-win finale.
On the move: James Rini of Wichita, Kan., started 28th and finished 10th.
