Sam Seawright embraces team owner Brett Coltman at Camden Speedway.
What won the race: Fighting off a late bid from Coltman Farms Racing teammate Luke Morey, Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., led 30 laps Monday at Camden Speedway to capture his first DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. The hub-hugging Seawright repelled fellow front-row starter Tanner English most of the way, then had his hands full with Morey in the closing laps, winning by just 0.076 of a second with Virginia invader Kyle Hardy just behind in third for the tour's caution-free debut at the Tennessee oval.
Quotable: "I thought Luke (Morey) got me there. I didn't know. I thought it was Tanner (English) the whole time," Seawright said. "I didn't know that was Luke, but I heard him up under me and I know I was leaving the door open. ... I guess we got the first one out of the way and maybe we can make this a good two weeks and rack up a few more."
Key notes: Outside front-row starter Sam Seawright becomes the first Alabama driver to win a Summer Nationals event; he plans on running the rest of the tour through July 12 at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio. ... Seawright's only previous series start came last season at Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel, Tenn. ... On the final lap at Camden, Seawright left plenty of room for runner-up Luke Morey exiting turn four. It was a near-photo finish at the checkers with Morey on the inside and third-place finisher Kyle Hardy just behind. ... Hardy got the high groove working late in the race in his series debut. ... Polesitter Tanner English ran second 25 laps but a switch to the high groove gave second to Morey and English ended up fourth. ... The nine-minute feature concluded at 11:09 p.m. ... Daniel Adam scratched. ... There were two red flags for rollover wrecks in prelims, but no injuries reported. ... Matt Cooper hit the wall and barrel-rolled in turn four in the first heat; in time trials, Oakley Johns rolled after striking the blunt end of the concrete wall at the track entrance between turns three and four. ... Sam Seawright's 14.352-second lap was declared the track record. ... The series returned to action after five consecutive rainouts.
On the move: Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., started 12th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Seawright's Coltman Farms Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Coltman Farms Racing, Special Needs School of Gwinnett, Autism Awareness, Cove 2 Coast Marine, J&R Excavating, Lance Kittle Truck and Trailer Repair, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein Shocks and McCallister Precision Marketing.
