Drake Troutman heads for a heat race victory in Mercer, Pa.
What won the race: Making the most of his time between regular rides, Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., led all 40 laps Wednesday at Michaels Mercer Raceway Park for a $6,000 Jay's Automotive United Late Model Series victory. Troutman drove a John Johnson-owned No. 48 to victory, taking the checkers 2.542 seconds ahead of fourth-starting Mike Marlar for his fourth career ULMS victory.
Quotable: "I've gotta give a huge shoutout to Colton Flinner and his family and Johnny Johnson for giving us an opportunity to get back on the racetrack here a little before expected," Troutman said, adding that "I think this just goes to show you what kind of crew I got ... It's been up and down (the) last week or so and there's times we might be down, but never count us out."
Key notes: Drake Troutman's shifter linkable broke heading for the scales and required a tow to weigh in postrace, delaying victory lane ceremonies. ... Troutman, who ran the World of Outlaws Late Model Series the past 18 months, last week left Team 22 Inc. in making plans to run for the a newly formed Late Model team of Maryland businessman Jerry Foster. ... Troutman ran at Mercer as a teammate to Colton Flinner, John Johnson's regular driver, who finished fourth. Troutman's team worked long hours Wednesday to prepare the car. ... Troutman's previous ULMS victory came July 27, 2024, at Hummingbird Speedway in Reynoldsville, Pa. ... Polesitter and second-running Max Blair spun on a lap-27 restart to fall from contention. ... Runner-up Mike Marlar made a last-minute trip to make his Mercer debut before heading to Ohio for the Lucas Oil weekend races. ... Florida visitor Clay Harris nearly went a lap down but steadied to finish fifth in his Mercer debut. ... Six cautions slowed the action, the first appearing on the third lap when Clay Ruffo spun in turn two. ... On the ninth lap, Del Rougeux and Greg Oakes spun in turn two. ... Two slowing cars (Bryan Bernheisel and Dave Stamm) halted the race on the 13th lap. ... On the 27th lap, Matt Glanden stopped in turn four (Blair's caution came on the ensuing restart and another yellow appeared before the next restart). ... The 29-minute feature concluded at 11 p.m. ... Mason Zeigler, winner of the first two ULMS events, was a no-show.... ULMS was in action for the first time since May 8 and at Mercer for the first time since April 15, 2017 (a race won by Dave Hess Jr.).
