What won the race: Third-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, led all 30 laps Sunday at Mason City Motor Speedway to extend his series points lead on the Malvern Bank East Series and earn $3,000. Simpson drove under polesitter Curt Schroeder, repelled a lap-two challenge from Jason Hahne and cruised the rest of the way for his first series victory of the season.
Quotable: "We've been running a different motor package and I just really wasn't confident going into this feature here tonight," Simpson said. "But as soon as we fired off right away, I knew we were going to be good.”
Key notes: Chad Simpson notched his sixth career tour victory. ... Simpson hasn't finished worse than fourth in seven series races thus far. ... Runner-up Jason Hahne and third-place finisher Justin Zeitner twice swapped the second spot. ... Two cautions slowed the 30-lapper, both before a lap was complete. ... The first start was scrapped amid near-spins and bumping that ended up with J.C. Wyman's car perched pereindicular atop Tim Ward's hood in turn two; no one was injured. ... The second start was also called back when Hahne, who started outside the front row, jumped the start. ... Dallon Murty failed to grab the $1,200 bonus for winning from the sixth starting spot (that bonus money rolls over to the next race). ... Series regulars Jesse Sobbing and Jeff Tharp scratched during Mason City prelims. According to Sobbing's team, he believed the hand-timed qualifying was inaccurate (transponder scoring wasn't functioning during time trials). ... The event went off without a hitch despite weekend rain that hit the track. ... Mason City hosts the Repairable Vehicles.com Tri-State Series on June 29.
On the move: Justin Zeitner of Malvern, Iowa, started seventh and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Simpson's Longhorn Chassis has a Pro Power Racing Engine and sponsorship from Randy Davidson Trucking, Moeller Farms, RTL Equipment, Johnson Holding Company, Burich Trucking, Stewart & Sons, Midwest Sheet Metal, Swift Springs and Bilstein Shocks.
