Trey Mills collected a career-high $20,000 payday at Magnolia.
What won the race: Muscling his way by Ethan Dotson for control on lap 29 then hanging on with a deflating left-rear tire on the final lap, sixth-starting Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., led the second half of Saturday's 60-lap Cotton Pickin' finale at Magnolia Motor Speedway for a $20,000 payday, the richest of his career. Mills beat Jimmy Owens to the line by 4.215 seconds for his first career Comp Cams Super Dirt Series victory and fourth feature win of the season.
Quotable: “I was trying to save (my tires) as long as I could and I seen (Ethan) Dotson slip out of (turn) two one time and we’re racing in the rubber for 20 grand,” Mills said. “I filled the hole, we made a little bit of contact, but we’re racing for $20,000, the biggest win of my career, so I took the chance and got it done. Then we had that (left rear) flat on the last corner of the race and I thought I lost it. I was holding on, but we managed to get the job done.”
Key notes: Mills led the final 32 laps for his richest-career payday, surpassing the $7,500 he earned June 26 in DIRTcar Summer Nationals action at Macon (Ill.) Speedway. ... Ethan Dotson, last year's Cotton' Pickin' winner, led twice for 23 laps (2-5, 10-28) before Mills muscled his way by; both drivers made contact multiple times, including heavy damage after lap-48 contact that caused a left-rear tire rub for Mills, eventually cutting his tire on the final lap. ... Dotson remained within striking distance until pushing wide out of turn two on lap 59, slapping the backstretch wall and cutting his right-rear tire. He limped to a sixth-place finish. ... Ninth-starting Neil Baggett followed Jimmy Owens by Dotson as they rounded out the podium finishers. ... Sam Seawright led twice for five laps (1, 6-9) before slowing on the 10th lap to draw the race's second and final yellow flag. He did not continue and was credited with 22nd. ... Series points leader Billy Moyer also retired under the lap-10 caution. ... Shane Clanton, winner of Aug. 9's Clash at the Mag, worked his way as high as third before pulling off under green on lap 53, crediting him with 13th. ... Charlie Cole stopped in turn two for the race's opening slowdown on lap nine and pitted a couple of times before eventually retiring on lap 18. ... The 60-lap Cotton Pickin' feature lasted 22 minutes, with 11 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Ryan Crane of Panama City, Fla., started 19th and finished 10th.
