What won the race: Making a second bid for the lead stick, Tanner English of Benton, Ky., slid under series points leader Jason Feger in turn three on the 44th lap and led the rest of Friday's MARS Championship Series 50-lapper at the Brownstown Bullring for a $10,000 payday. The seventh-starting English took the checkers 1.599 seconds ahead of the fifth-starting Feger, who led laps 17-43 following an early back-and-forth battle between leaders Michael Leach and Shannon Babb.
Quotable: “Really, at the beginning I thought, ‘Man, I have messed up.’ I felt like I had a terrible car," English said, "and then, just, I guess they just wore their tires out.”
Key notes: Tanner English notched his 17th career MARS victory and second in the Brownstown 100 (that 2023 victory was his previous MARS triumph). ... The winner's slide job in turn three with 11 laps remaining briefly put him out front, but Jason Feger moved back ahead before the start-finish line. English persisted and made his next turn-three move work with seven laps remaining. ... Feger, who had a deflating right-rear tire late in the race, was going for his ninth MARS victory and fourth in his last five starts. ... Third-starting Michael Leach led the first two laps, the sixth lap, then laps 9-14. ... Polesitter Shannon Babb led laps 3-5 and 7-8 and ended up fourth. ... Leach (low) and Babb (high) swapped the lead early but the second-running Leach's race ended with a broken rear suspension on the 24th lap. ... Outside front-row starter Tony Jackson Jr. retired after 14 laps. ... Six cautions slowed the action, the first on the 15th lap for Jake Little's flat right-rear. ... On the 17th lap, Jake Timm spun exiting turn four. ... Leach's departure drew a midway caution (and third-running Ryan Unzicker caught damage from the incident, forcing his retirement). ... Two lap-26 yellows appeared, first for debris then for a tangle between Kyle McMahon, Jeff Herzog and Mark Voigt. ... McKay NAPA Auto Parts was the event's presenting sponsor. ... The series heads to Peoria (Ill.) Speedway for Saturday's Illinois State Championship.
On the move: Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., started 11th and finished third; tail-starting Jose Parga of New Berlin, Ill., finished eighth.
