Kevin Eder takes the checkers for his career-highest payday.
What won the race: Powering around early leader Gunner Frank and nosing ahead on the eighth lap, third-starting Kevin Eder of Cameron, Wis., commanded the final 43 laps unchallenged in winning Saturday's 50th annual Red Clay Classic at ABC Raceway. Eder beat John Kaanta by 1.412 seconds for a $15,000 payday, the most lucrative victory of his career and fourth overall win in the last month.
Quotable: “It’s very comforting looking up at the scoreboard and seeing two of the most respected guys in the pits behind you when you’re racing on rubber, because any one of them can take a shot and move you out of line,” Eder said. “I know it probably wasn’t the most exciting race in the world, but (I’m) really happy to be standing up here with John Kaanta and Ashley Anderson, there’s a lot of wins between the two of them.”
Key notes: Eder earned an additional $500 thanks to C.G. Bretting Manufacturing. ... It's his second overall Red Clay Classic triumph after winning previously in super stock action. ... Eder won his third special event and fourth feature of the season, all of them coming since Aug. 30 at Hibbing (Minn.) Raceway. ... Fifth-starting John Kaanta overtook Gunner Frank for second on a lap-27 restart, but never challenged Eder over the race's second half. ... Polesitter Ashley Anderson settled for third. ... Twelfth-starting Kyle Peterlin grabbed fifth from Frank on lap 41. ... The second-starting Frank, of Montrose, Iowa, led the opening seven laps before slipping as low as eighth then tangling with Adam Ayotte on lap 47, ending both their nights during the fourth and final caution. ... Ninth-finishing Jake Hartung overcame contact with Sammy Mars that sent him spinning on a lap-27 restart attempt, while Mars rallied to 13th after the caution was pinned on him. ... Darrell Nelson, winner of the night's modified feature, improved 13 positions to round out the top 10. ... Shane Sabraski, winner of last year's Red Clay Classic, could only work his way to 14th after utilizing a provisional starting position. He was the final starter to complete 50 laps. ... Steve Laursen and Dave Flynn both retired after tangling while battling for 13th to trigger the initial lap-27 stoppage. ... Nick Anvelink slowed after the opening lap and placed 25th as the race's first retiree. ... The race lasted 28 minutes with 15 starters running at the finish.
On the move: Cole Searing of Huron, S.D., started 20th and finished seventh.
