Adam Yarbrough (center) was crowned King of the Carolinas.
What won the race: Taking advantage when race-long leader Anthony Sanders slowed with a flat right-front tire on the 35th lap, third-starting Adam Yarbrough of Denver, N.C., led the final five laps of Saturday's $3,508 Buddy Smith Memorial at Carolina Speedway. Yarbrough captured his second Cagle Automotive Blue Ridge Outlaw Late Model Series victory of the season and second of his career.
Quotable: “It’s good (to win this event), it means a lot. Winning the King of the Carolinas race is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” Yarbrough said. “I hate it for Anthony (Sanders) he had a superior car tonight until he had trouble. Them restarts kinda hurt me a little bit, but that move (on the late restart), getting by Dale (Timms) and Kennie (Compton Jr.), it was good. It was a really good night.”
Key notes: Yarbrough's other Blue Ridge Outlaws victory came May 25 at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C., worth $3,000. ... Anthony Sanders led the opening 35 laps from the pole before retiring with a flat right-front tire; he was credited with ninth in the final rundown. ... Points leader Dale Timms took second in the late going and finished 2.147 seconds behind Yarbrough at the checkers. ... Kennie Compton Jr. advanced 11 positions to round out the podium finishers. ... Fifth-finishing Mark Greene was the final starter to complete 40 laps. ... Bryan Mullis retired on the 22nd lap and placed 11th. ... Second-starting Travis Steele retired on lap 17. ... The 62-minute race honored former racer Buddy Smith of Cherryville, N.C., who scored nearly 500 victories in Late Model-style cars from 1978-2009; Smith was inducted into Cherokee's Hall of Fame in 2018 and Carolina Speedway's Hall of Fame in '21. He died July 8, 2021, at the age of 65. ... Brandon Kinard scratched.
On the move: Baron McDowell of Fountain Inn, S.C., started 19th and finished seventh.
