David Payne earned his first career Topless Outlaw Series victory.
What won the race: Powering by race-long leader Kyle Courtney on the 35th lap, sixth-starting David Payne of Murphy, N.C., led the rest of Saturday's 50-lap Jail Breaker Potato Chips Topless Outlaw Series stop at North Georgia Speedway. Payne beat John Ownbey to the checkers by 0.610 of a second for the $5,000 payday, his first career Topless Outlaws victory and second overall feature win of the season.
Quotable: “This Capital Race Car was flawless, I could drive it wherever I needed to. I got to racing there, I could dive that bottom and still keep (the suspension) loaded,” Payne said. “We ran over that lapped car who had a flat over there and I hit him with the left-front, knocked the toe-in out, so I stopped down here and moved my steering wheel. I got to racing with John (Ownbey), took my eye off the outside wall and knocked the right-front off of it, so we’re gonna have to replace the whole front end, but that’s OK.”
Key notes: Payne added to his Sept. 1 victory in local Limited Late Model action at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, N.C. ... It's his first special event since last Aug. 24 when he earned a Southern All Star Series victory at Georgia's Sugar Creek Raceway, worth $5,057. ... Second-starting Kyle Courtney led the opening 34 laps before giving way to Payne, then John Ownbey a handful of laps later, eventually settling for third. ... The fourth-starting Ownbey kept pace with Payne over the final nine laps, but never truly contended for the top spot. ... Polesitter Booger Brooks settled for fourth. ... Zach Sise finished fifth, clinching his first career Topless Outlaws Series championship. ... Jed Emert, winner of the last series race Sept. 20 at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn., advanced four positions to finish sixth. ... Kenny Kizzar continued to finish 13th after his lap-46 spin drew the race's third and final yellow flag. He was the final starter to complete 50 laps. ... Tenth-running Dante Curtis slammed the turn-four wall on the 25th lap, bringing out the second stoppage. He retired and was credited with 17th. ... Terry Poore's flat right-rear tire drew the first slowdown on lap 11. He continued until retiring on lap 33, placing 15th. ... The feature lasted 28 minutes. ... Kelby Norwood, Brandon Boyd and Tyler Nichols scratched.
On the move: Landon Gentry of Rossville, Ga., started 19th and finished 10th.
