Daniel Hilsabeck celebrates his first career Late Model victory.
What won the race: Lucas Oil Series regular Daniel Hilsabeck of Earlham, Iowa, led all 30 laps unchallenged in dominating fashion to capture Friday's Fall Nationals prelim at Lucas Oil Speedway. Hilsabeck survived a late-race restart for his first career Late Model victory, beating Chris Simpson to the line by 0.477 of a second for a $5,000 payday in unsanctioned Super Late Model action.
Quotable: “My signal guy was (telling) me I had a pretty good lead there ... I hated to see that caution with three (laps) to go. I felt like I was a sitting duck. I didn’t feel like I was that great at the end,” Hilsabeck said. “This is awesome. This is my first Super Late Model win. We’ve been getting our butt kicked this year with the Lucas (Oil) Series. ... It feels great.”
Key notes: Hilsabeck grabbed his first Late Model win of any kind. ... Chris Simpson, winner of last year's Fall Nationals finale, trailed Hilsabeck the final eight laps but never truly threatened even after the race's fourth and final caution came with three laps to go. Simpson prevailed for the runner-up spot after a back-and-forth battle with Tyler Kuykendall (the two traded second on laps 20 and 22-23) before Kuykendall slipped to fifth on the late restart. ... Dillon McCowan took advantage of the lap-28 restart and finished third while 13th-starting Caden McWhorter grabbed fourth from Kuykendall on the final lap. ... Trevor Gundaker gained seven spots for a seventh-place result. ... The lap-28 yellow was triggered when 11th-running Gordy Gundaker slowed and pulled off. He completed one additional lap after pitting before being credited with 14th. ... The third caution came on the fourth lap for an apparent tangle between Glen Powell and Steve Stultz; both soldiered to 18th- and 19th-place finishes, respectively. ... Raymond Merrill spun on the third lap before requiring a tow back to the pits. ... Debris drew the race's first yellow flag on the second lap. ... The Fall Nationals prelim lasted 25 minutes with 12 starters completing 30 laps. ... The two-day event concludes with Saturday's 40-lap, $10,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Caden McWhorter of Fairbury, Ill., started 13th and finished fourth.
